Nasty Noise (Perhaps Diff?)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My 56 plate TFSI VRS started making some really nasty noises today, and i'm worried that it might me the diff, any thoughts would be appreciated. When pulling off in 1st there is a really low down grumbling / vibration, which also continues in 2nd if you are accelerating. If you happen to turn right whilst also accelerating this is accompanied by a grinding / whining sound!

Why do these thinga always happen when you can't get to a garage!!! Should i drive it like this or get it recovered?

Cheers,

Chris

Only a guess, but might be a halfshaft CV joint has broken

Hi, thanks for the reply. If a half shaft or CV had broken wouldnt i loose all drive as i dont have a lock ing or limited slip diff? Im a devout off roader and have broken many a half shaft on my landrover! ;) .

Not always. The various bits inside the joint might have broken but still allowing a connection from gearbox to wheel.

But the halfshaft is not running true hence causing serious vibration.

I would be wary of driving it in case it breaks totally or locks up solidemoticon-0104-surprised.gif

I'd love to take it to bit's myself & find out, I just cant help myself usually! But unfortunatly it's a company car...... and to make things worse i'm leaving the company next month...... how am i going to explain this?

Just a quick update, the VRS went off to the dealer this morning on the back of a recovery truck!!! :'(

They just called and said that the Near side Engine / Gearbox mounting was only being held on by 1 bolt half screwed in, the other had been pulled clean out stripping the threads and the other had sheared the head off leaving the rest in situe!!

WHAT ON EARTH COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS?? They seemed to think that the car must have has a cluch recently but i have had the car for the last 30k miles and the nobody has done anything to it other than services and any other bits that i've mentioned under warrant. It's only done 46k miles.

Cheers,

Chris

It's not had any work done in that area has it?

If so for some reason many garages (including some main dealers) seem to think that it is ok to reuse the single use only stretch bolts that are used there.

The PD170 did at one point have some issues with the mounts too, so you can never tell.

Hmmm, this is a interesting one.

I have grumbling/vibrating noises whilst setting off, and wouldn't say it was my DMF given the mileage and as it doesn't feel anywhere near as knackered as the DMF on the works van.

I know my CV joints aren't in the best of shapes (slight clicking in reverse and on full lock)

But im having a thumping noise/feeling whilst setting off, if i let off of the throttle in any gear from 3rd downwards at low revs i get a noise similar to a "thok" noise.

If i let off of the throttle with a around 2000rpm upwards i dont get the thumping noise, which i find strange.

If i up the pace in 2nd the gearbox starts to whine a little. But at low revs in any gear it doesn't whine even upto motorway paces and overtaking.

If i carry a tightish corner with a little pace, the gearbox also tends to whine. But this morning im sure i heard a grumble come from one of the CV's as i was using 2nd gear to slow the car turning 90 degrees onto a tight street with cars parked either side.

Does any of these symptoms apply to your car oct2vrs?

Hi Browny, the vibration whilst setting off sounds similar, and interestingly a few months ago i had a few bits done on the car & one of the things i asked them to look at was a "crack" noise that would come from the NSF when decelerating slowly then moving off too, bur they couldnt find a problem.

The whining also sounds similar, minw was only under power whilst turning right ish.

If you think you may have the same problem, i would get it checked ASAP, as mine must have been loosening for ages because nobody whilst i've has it would have had any reason to remove those bolts!

The REALLY scary thing is this time last year i did a round trip to Denmark involving quite a bit of autobahn work.......... needless to say i would not have liked it to let go on there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Chris
