So what makes a 110, 140 & 170 BHP engine

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone knew what the difference was between each of the diesel engines in the Yeti. I am sure they will all be the same block etc but wonder if it is simply that the 110 & 140 are detuned via ECU map or whether its different cams, turbo boost etc.

In other words (warrantly & morality aside) how much work is it to make a 110 into a 170bhp?

Turbo, manifold, mapping, injectors probably...

Possibly camshaft.

You'll probably can get the engine remapped to the next power step up.

My guess is ECU mapping mostly, although gearbox ratios may require some alteration, in particular the higher gears.

I wouldn't be suprised if the higher output engines have different camshafts , pistons, conrods etc . They may share the same block but to maintain reliablity some parts may be "beefed-up" to withstand the higher stresses/forces on them.

I have a 2.0 (not CR) Passat 170 TDI and believe it's just the chip and mapping.

However I think I noticed on the specification section that each of the 3 models has different sized brake discs so there may be other differences.

hi muckpaws,

i have a 170 cr tdi and to the best of my knowledge although block, stroke etc is the same on all three tdi's its the ancillaries and ecu settings that make the difference. 170 has a bigger turbo and inter-cooler probably. superchips give bhp and torque graphs to show the effect of chipping and these can be compared with the standard of the others. to cut to the chase in my view its better to have an engine that was designed to produce the power in standard trim than an upgrade. the down side is that to get at the 170 engine you have to pay for lots of toys you might not want or use and in time give more grief when they go wrong. however the 170 is intoxicating and the power is well worth the extra if you can stretch to it.

For me, having the 170 only available in Elegance was a bonus, 'cos it meant I "had" to have Elegance. :D

I like your train of thought....
