Octavia 1.9TDI Maintenance

Featured Replies

Hi,

Im new around here, and also new to maintaining the Skoda Octavia.

I had a recent quote for some work but felt it was prohibitively expensive, bearing in mind the age of the car - just over 10 years.

Its been a few years, but I used to do my own maintenance, and was wondering how hard it is to change all four discs and pads. Do you need any special tools?

I also have a broken coil spring (very near the top so still drivable), and leaking shocks at the rear, as well as perished bump stops. I'm tempted to have a go at all the work, but again would appreciate hearing any other members tips, and experiences in these areas.

Many thanks,

Tiz

front pads and disks: 7mm allen key (ideally on a socket drive) if you have the FSIII calipers (I have them on my 2001 TDi 110)

rear pads: Piston wind-in tool (I made my own with a g-clamp and a cut piece of pole, but a proper tool is easier in the long run

front shocks: something to help part the hub/clamp assembly (I found an allen key on a socket drive [see front pads & disks] worked well for me), and a set of spring compressors.

rear shocks: easy.

fwiw, I have done all of this at home

Thanks for tips. I've booked Friday off work to give it a go.

Good luck :-)

Oh, some copper/silver slip, and a wire brush for cleaning things up would not go amiss either. Might need am impact driver to get the grub screws out of the disks too.

Final tool: somewhere dry and out of the wind to do the work :-)

Get a can of PlusGas dismantling fluid too (WD40 is not a dismantling fluid).

You can get to the back of the grub screws mbanes mentions and spray in the hole.

Make sure you grease the caliper guide pins. The calipers are prone to sticking/binding (especially on the rear)

Agreed; it honestly is worth the money in saved time and unskinned knuckles alone.
