Drumming noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have searched on here for an hour or so and cant seem to find an answer to my problem.

I get a drumming type sound, not sure from which tyre/wheel, but a few posts suggested that i switch my tyres round, tried that but no luck.

I basically get a drumming type sound between maybe 20-25 up to around 40mph, it isnt wheel bearing noise, ive had that before, like i said its like the drumming type noise you get from rear window opened.

Anyway ive jacked it up and felt for play in the wheel at 12.00 and 6.00 oclock and 3.00 and 9.00 oclock but no movement there either, and all windows are shut tight!

I would really appeciate any suggestions on this, or maybe i just wait and when the tyres are due to be replaced hopefully it will solve it, maybe not !?!?!?

Its a 07 Octy VRS TDI

cheers

Hi

Is it there all the time? My fabia does the same but only on certain bits of road because of the surface.

Regards Chris

Better chance of an informed answer on the Octy 2 forum than on the Fabia 1 forum?

I'm thinking in terms of a labouring DMF and/or well-worn tyres.

Oops didnt mean to put it in the Fabia forum, any one know how to move it?

I dot think its the DMF, had one go in a leon cupra tdi and it happens downhill under no acceleration or indeed in neutral gear.

Not worn tyres either as i checked these when swapping wheels around.

And yes the sound is there all the time, road surface doesnt make any difference!!

cheers

Could be the wheels aint balanced properly.

Could be the wheels aint balanced properly.

But if the wheels are not balanced properly would i not get a vibration at high speeds?

If its the front wheels then yes but if its coming from the rear then im not so sure.

You may want to check the tread pattern on your rear tyres and look for uneven tyre-wear, such as wearing more on the inside of the tyre, and saw-toothing. If this is the case you might also get a humming or drumming sound from the tyres as they gradually wear down. This is a common problem on the Octy II's and is well documented over on the Octy II forums. It is possible to rectify this by applying revised wheel alignment settings - if you ask the guys over on the octy forums they should be able to help you.

Of course it may not be the above, but it might be worth a check bud.
