Wot no thermostat?

Featured Replies

Hello! A short while back the thermostat in my Felicia GLXi Estate(T reg 1999) came apart and blocked the tube. I took it out and being the cheapskate I am have been running my car without it. Would this be having any detrimental effect at all? Someone told me I'd be burning more fuel, I don't think so, or would I?

I'll be getting a new one at the end of the month, only about £7 if I remember rightly.

Also, the indicator light for dipped beam on the dash isn't working (main beam and sidelights OK). I've checked the fuse but still no good. Any ideas?

yes put a stat back in as the ecu will be firing more fuel into a cooler engine also can cause premature wear on lots of engine componants like pistons etc..

bulb gone in the dash is all for the light they are tiny grain of wheat bulbs hard to find tho

The function of a thermostat is basically to stop water flowing through the radiator until the engine is fully warmed up. Removing the thermostat will slow warm up (and give you a rubbish heater on cold mornings until it gets some warm). The slow warm up will burn more fuel, maybe a quarter more until the engine gets hot, which should be in about 2 miles from start.

As for the dipped beam light, who the fvck started this fashion for dipped beam idiot lights anyway? I can see why a main beam one is mandated, similarly for front and rear fogs, but dip?

Cheers guys, best get a new one quick, £7.50 with staff discount, not bad.

Does the dipped beam light in the instrument panel not turn off when your left sidelight is broke?

not sure I have the right car in mind, maybe you can check sidelights are good? otherwise sorry for wasting your time lol

When I bought my Felicia a few weeks back, it had a busted stat. Replaced it and to be honest, apart from the temp gauge actually registering now, it has not made any differnce to mpg or performance.

Having said that, it's best to have a stat in place I'm sure.
