Ok so i've had an idea for doing a custom intercooler install.

I'm thinking of purchasing this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INTERCOOLER-Polished-FMIC-Buick-GN-Supra-UNIVERSAL_W0QQitemZ290403348124QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item439d636e9c

Then buy a forge MAP sensor tube and some silicone hose instead of aluminium pipe. Then just bend the hose, connect it to the pancake pipe, install the MAP sensor and connect to throttle body.......... Voila. Can anyone see any problems doing this lol

Cheers

I'm sure there must be a reason why long pipe runs on competition cars are ally pipe with silicone hose for bends and vibration links.

Possibly, but looking at the forge FMIC i think that comes with silicone hoses rather then pipe work.

It'll be for weight. The silicone hose weighs alot more than thin walled ally pipe.

It was one of the ways of shedding weight from a formula student car. Can't remember how much we saved in the swap, but it was a surprisingly large amount.

Ah well, at that rate, nothing specific.

Wow....that looks like a bargain

Welds look a little untidy.... not that that matters as long as it holds boost pressure.

IMO single pass is the way to go..... perhaps not quite as good a thermol efficiency of a double pass IC but should have a lower pressure drop which helps eliminate compressor surge if your running high boost.

I'm ordering a similar design FMIC next week and its going to cost approx 5 times as much :'(

Are you going down the custom route or are you buying a one designed for the Octy? I'd be interested to see how you get on with the install

Hi

I've decided to buy a pro alloy FMIC (which is designed for the MK1 vRS)..... then the plan is to fit a pro alloy inlet manifold and replace the turbo later this year.

Here's a pic of my Pro Alloy FMIC..... its took a couple of weeks to make but the build quality looks excellent

I'm going to do a pressure test befor I fit it just to be on the safe side.....but I'm sure it will be OK.

And for interest I'm going to "dust off" my old college books and use some auto math to calculate additional boost system volume and from that calculate any additional turbo lag.

Will get some more pics when its fitted

Nice FMIC there and looks good enough to eat... :giggle:

I have a habit of putting stuff on the dinning table which goes down a very well with SWMBO.
