Oil temperature is listed in the maxi dot display.

I do not have maxi dot... just board computer...

Cant find it on mine. But mine was first used Sep 09! And Im pleased to say it doesn't tell me when to change gear.

Hi,

oil temp reading as previously mentioned is one of the display options with Maxidot and is applicable along with a 'gear change' indicator (thanks Ray) to Monsters built WK45 2009 on.

Think aerofurb published a photo and details sometime back, reads from 50 degrees upward and settles around the 90 mark at normal operating temp.

The same week as the engine codes changed.. ;)

Hi Ray,

yes except the 170; still had the original CEGA as of early Jan anyway. Would lead me to think that the engine change and Maxidot update are not directly connected but a coincidental part of a scheduled production upgrade.

Now I am confused... My yeti was build in January 2010, I have the gear indicator, but cannot find oil temp gauge. It says in the manual that you do not need maxi dot to have ooil temp gauge. It should show oil temp. when you start the engine but mine just shows outside temp:(

Hi,

have you tried looking for a reading with the engine at normal operating temperature, as it does not record below 50 degrees as I understand it. Other than that might be a question to your dealer I'm afraid.

Hi,

for me the oil temp is on the maxidot.

I access it by using the thumb (finger?) scrolling button on the right hand stalk. Scroll/flick this round and you get outsde temp and keep going and you get MPG, average MPG and some others I can't recall,

eventually you get to Oil Temp. When the car is cold the oil temp is shown as - - - -, as the car warms the temp comes on. I found mine vairies between 95-98 and up to 110C (maximum I've observed) depending on load/speed.

My oil and coolant temperatures usuall follow pretty close to each other. I have never seen oil hotter than mid 90's. At sustained high speed - 85-90 mph- the coolant and oil are90 and 95 or so.

When idling for a bit, coolant temp drops rather soon unless having driven for quite a bit.

Presumably the radiator and oil cooling arrangement on the 170 is bigger than the 140?

I've only seen 100+ when driving 'quickly' on dual carrigeway A roads with plenty of roundabouts... emoticon-0105-wink.gif

why do some cars have oil temp displays? Sorry for my ignorance but surely water temp is enough?

Seen oil temp guages on a few cars (usually track cars like caterhams etc) and never really understood why they were needed

Oil takes a lot longer to get to temperature than water temp (say 15mins vs 5mins). Ideally you shouldn't start using all of your engines performance until the oil is up to temperature, the gauge is there to stop you thrashing the engine too early!

ahh i never knew that!

So why does oil take so long to get warmer, is it because theres more of it, or that its thicker? I'd have thought it would warm up quicker as its actually inside the engine rather than being just circulated through the engine body?

Years ago many cars just had blinking lights that did just that no matter what the temperature was. They where intended to show a warning when operating temperatures where exceeded. It is more important to have more accurate information. To some extent it depends on where the Temperature senders are located as to or not give a good picture of what is going on. Oil temperature gives a better idea of what temperature the engine is operating at, oil coats all the moving surfaces and is also part of the cooling equipment. Water has the main task of controlling the ultimate temperature of an engine but also providing heat in the cabin. The water channel matrix mainly concentrates on the cylinder head where most heat is produced through the combustion process. The design of the cooling equipment is such that it will come up to temperature quickly and maintain that temperature. Modern synthetic oils remain in grade better than oils of old and will hold grade almost indefinably. Bearing surface may start to become stressed outside of their design envelope. The engine is intended to give best performance when it is operating at the correct temperature were tolerances are at their ideal not overly slack or tight. The oil gauge should give the best indication of if the ideal temperatures have been achieved and maintained. The water does not do this so attentively. However it is just as important to monitor it.
