Uneven rear tyre wear

Featured Replies

Anybody got any ideas on this. I've gone through (another) set of fronts. No surprises there. Had the typical 8k out of them. The rears had been on the car for at least 35k and 2.5-3 years. The things just won't die! Had the new tyres fitted to the rears with a view to getting the last out the old ones and then replacing them in a month or 2.

The tyres on the rear haven't worn evenly. The outsides both have about 3mm left on them; hence I want to use them up. The insides have at least 5mm. Any ideas on what may have caused this? Should I be worried? I've tried the search and only came up with the rear suspension bushes possibly having failed however the info on this suggested it would be the inside not the outside that was excessively worn.

sounds about right for the rear tyres, what make are they ? is the wear even on both sides ?

i'm guessing by the fact that you rip through front tyres in 8k miles that you do drive the car pretty hard, so hard cornering will wear the outer edges more than the inside

They're bridgestone turanzas. And yes both tyres are showing the same level/pattern of wear - less on the inside. I don't think that I drive my car "that" hard and I tend to have softer tyres on the front (P zero nero's, Toyo TR1's, uniroyal rainsports) but my daily run has a lot of A roads and roundabout so maybe. Makes sense I suppose with more weight transfered onto the outside of the tyre through cornering.

If it is down to driving then fair enough. I was more worried about there being a mechanical fault. I'll just keep a better eye on the new set and swap them from one side t'other after 15k or so!

Cheers.

If you want to rule out any alignment problems you could get a full four wheel alignment done. As for swapping from one side to the other the outside of the tyre will still be on the outside no matter what side of the car you put it on, besides which I'm sure I once read that it wasn't a great idea to change the direction of travel of a tyre that's been used.

Surely if you took the tyre off the wheel and refitted it the other way round it would the "inside" would be the "outside"? And this would be essential on a set of directional tyres???

Didn't know that changing the direction of travel was a bad idea though. Cheers.

Even though it's not adjustable (well not easily at least) I would have the rear camber checked. I have the same tyres on the rear, they have done 34K and are 5mm across the entire tread pattern.

but it would have to be very positive the camber to wear the outer edges, excessive toe in would be a more likely issue, but to have it even on both sides is highly unlikely

i say it is just normal wear and tear, and lets face it, Bridgestone turanzas aren't the best tyre around, one of the worst IMO for uneven wear patterns, especially on the rear
