engine start up noise & clutch noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

Apologies if my query is covered elsewhere.

My car is a 2001 1.6L petrol Octavia, 90K mile. ( have had it since it read 60K)

During very cold weather last month, I left the lights on ( warning sound not working!), resulted in having to jump start the car. Since then when I start the engine there is a loud screaching like noise as the engine starts, apart from this everything is normal. However if the engine is turned off and restarted almost immediatly there is no screaching noise. Anyone know the cause and if there is anything to worry about.

Second query:

Over the last few day I noticed a whistling noise, it took me a while to work it out but the following are the symptome.

1. Whistling noise is present when the clutch pedle is pressed, this happens when stopped in traffic and when changing gears while the vehicle is moving.

2. I carried out the tests for a slipping clutch as recommended in other posts and all appears to be ok.

3. The noise is a low intermittent whistle, the car window need to be open to hear it properly, if the peddle is pushed up and down a few times the noise tends to disappear.

4. Bizarly when the car is parked facing up a slight hill there is no noise (in driveway)

Can anyone suggest what the cause of this noise is and if it needs to be remedied?

The squeal when starting is the alternator belt slipping, and I'd guess the other one is the clutch release bearing.
