Dealer purchase or online purchase ?

What are peoples experiences of whether you get a better deal online or from your local dealers, and do the online dealers offer you exactly the same spec factory built cars the local dealer will ? Pros and cons please ?

In my experience although I haven't got the vehicle yet but have all the paperwork pertaining to the official order and have paid the deposit prove that the the online deals are very good providing you scrutinise the detail.

My vehicle order Yeti TDI CR 140 4x4 SE metallic paint, Off road button, Towbar prep, tyre pressure monitor, spare wheel and floor mats.

3 yrs or 60k warranty, 3yrs breakdown assist and 12 mths VEL came out at £18,258.28 cash with no part exchange.

The best I could get a dealer (3 separate dealer quotes) to do for the same spec was £19,725.00.

Hi,

only bought one car from an internet broker (Broadspeed) this was my wife's Corsa. They put me in touch with a Vauxhall dealer 'down south' who was able to beat the best local deal by about £500 at that time. After collecting the car we had problems with the A/C (5 air compressors later and out of warranty still not right :( ) The dealer was not interested, saw the distance between us as a get out clause.

I did try Broadspeed again for a quote on a Tiguan before deciding to go for the Snow-Monster. The advertised price turned out to only apply to dealer stock, none of which matched what I was looking for; felt that this was a bit of a swizz to be honest.

With the Yeti at the time none of the brokers were discounting so I went local, which in many ways has been fortuitous I think. Not had the best of luck with Yeti ordering or ownership so far. Reorder required as the wrong spec was built first time round and the second has cabin creaks and now possible stereo failure :( :S So far the local dealer service team have been very sportive in trying to put things right. The only criticism I have with the dealer, particularly sales is that I have to ring them; they tend to forget to call me back

Regards,

TP

Good Evening,

I spoke to 2 local dealers and neither were prepared to move on the list price, however one did offer use £400 more on our trade in than the book price.

I got a quote from http://www.skodastore.com/ which was 12% off the list price and was then put directly in touch with the Skoda dealer. The finance and everything else is via the Skoda dealer and the service has been first class. I chose to drive up and speak to them in person, to discuss trading in my Wife's Micra and the finance options available.

We ordered the car (factory order) the dealer recently confirmed that the car's been built and is on it's way, fingers crossed we should have it in a couple of weeks.

Presumably the online dealers make their margins on the fact they dont have showrooms ?? Guess I am bit wary of doing something this expensive online and with a local dealer you are not happy you just go and see them.

I got a quote for a 2.0 Elegance 140bhp, metallic paint, park assist, tyre pressure monitor, mats, mudflaps which came out at £19500 ish inclusive of part ex (based on value of my car without seeing it).

Take a look at the thread 'Yeti SE 140 ordered on the web' on page 5 below

We got ours through Drive the Deal and it really was no problem at all.

Our local dealers weren't interested in discountling anywhere near the DtD price. DtD put you in touch with a dealer and all communication was via email and very efficient.

We collected the car from the Dealer on Monday and everything went without a hitch.

Given the price differentials, I can't imagine ordering another car any other way.

I too have gone through Drive the Deal and as John has previously outlined his on line purchase went without a hitch.

Mine is progressing with DtD and their Skoda dealer quite satisfactorily so far.

I had previously researched another on line supplier named Carquake but as I indicated in the earlier post Barsteward refers to, further delving into the detail made me twitchy.

The Carquake deal was kosher but I became nervous of the seller hanging onto the V5 document for a few months before I got it.

interesting thread this, given the apparent ease with which one can do a deal on-line with a virtual salesman. As I am not averse to doing anything on-line I thought I'd give it a go.

I immediately gave Broadspeed a miss as `i did not like the way that they did business at all, and pursued may of the others thereafter including drivethedeal and buyacar and skodashop (or whatever it is called) amongst others.

Each quoted differing prices of a new (identical spec) Yet - BUT there seemed to be no way to start a haggle with them. And it is my belief that if you want the best deal, you need to be able to do some bargaining. That means "best price" or "walk away".

Another thing that fazed me slightly, and ultimately decided me, was that any quote for my trade in, whilst often 'ball-park' was "subject to confirmation" - or words in that flavour.

I could see, perhaps, that we did a deal, agreed a new Yet price, then stumbled upon the all important "figure to change" because the px was downgraded at the last minute. I doubt that, in reality, that this would actually be the case since i had quite honestly told about the condition, miles, bodywork tyres of my px - ~BUT it was enough of a questionmark for me.

The clinch came however when I went for a test drive 40 miles away (I live in rural isolation up a mid-Wales mountain) with Sinclair Skoda in Swansea. I had previously had a test and a quote from Griffin Mill in Pontypool, and found them adrift price-wise.

The chap at Sinclair Skoda had prefaced his test drive with me by saying he'd "prefer 5% of something, than 100% of nothing"!! And he was absolutely true to his word.

His figure for a new Yet was competitive - not AS good as on-line - and his px was ball-park. When I wrinkled my forehead at him (remember - HAGGLING.....?) he sharpened his pencil and immediately delivered a price that made both of us smile - and shake hands!

So - in conclusion, for me, one dealer even face to face was unable to deliver a deal (perhaps because he was a lad, and had to refer to his manager all the time), while the other was able to do the needful - (and it was directly WITH the manager Andy I dealt).

With regard to on-line - the most efficient and impressive web presence was with buyacar who have a very effective website, have email back-up, and SMS contact as well. They were not pushy - yet didn't lose contact either.

For me being able to eyeball a salesman, see the metalwork, have him appraise my px won hands down - especially in the comfort factor, the feeling of being in control and getting the best I could won the day. I would even have been prepared to have spent a few hundred over the odds to feel that factor. As it happened, Sinclair Skoda, with Andy tjeir sales manager did the biz for this punter.
