burnt plastic smell from exhaust

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Just part exhanged my Fabia VRS for a sensible brand new 7 seat Hyundai Santa Fe last week and couldnt be happier and content ....until the strong smell of burnt plastic began to flow from the exhaust this morning. I have made a few journeys today and each time the strong smell of burnt plastic has hung around the rear of the car when I come to a stop. There is no abnormal smoke coming from the exhausts when the engine is running and I am therefore left thinking it is either general enging running in smells (this is my first brand new car so cannot compare to previous experiences) or something more sinister.

Any suggestions or explanations would be appreciated. I have poked around the engine bay and there are no smells at all from the front of the car. Should I be worried and thinking of heading back to the dealer ?!?!

Thanks.

Transport packing on the exhaust?

If not for the lack of smell at the front of the car, I'd be thinking it was just a plastic bag wrapped around the exhaust, and would go away after 50 miles or so at the M/way speed limit.

Either that or if it's a new car then perhaps the coating is burning off the exhaust as it is starting to get hot enough to do so.

Just ask the dealer to have a quick check for you to make sure nothing it wrong, then play it by ear.

Yep - the exhaust on my brand new Schitroen made exactly the same smell until the coating had burnt off.

As said, take your new car for a trip up the motorway to get the exhaust fully hot.

Could be the backbox touching the rear bumper causing a burning smell, but its not realy burning its trying to melt the bumper,

Check if the exhaust tip is touching the rear bumper if so get it pushed down..

I'd be seriously worried if a diesel exhaust tip got hot enough to burn the plastics in the back bumper.

I'm still with it being the protective oily coating that most mild steel has one it to stop it rusting in storage.

If it is that it will burn off soon enough.
