Alternator problem, i think!

Featured Replies

My good lady's Vrs has recently started to make a metalic whining noise that get louder as you rev the engine, its coming from the left hand side of the engine. I have a feeling that it may be the alternator bearings, will take the auxillary belt of and run the car without it to see if the noise goes. Does anybody know how much a replacement is? Is it possible to just change the bearings? Any help/advice would be gratefully received! :)

my octavia is making that sort of noise but it s the air con pump

Sure I heard that a new alternator was about £100 pounds?

Mine makes an odd noise but I think it might be the actual aux belt itself as the v's are cracked when you turn the belt over?

Might lift the bonnet tomorrow and have another listen.

could be the pulley on the alternator, there is a sort of freewheel mechanism inside the pulley, when these fail they can make a terrible noise
