G62 TEMP SENSOR FAULT CODE?

Featured Replies

Anyone one know where on the 1.9tdi 130 i'll find the little blighter? So I can check the connections and wiring before i put in the garage to get a new one??

Code read it today and got this up. But I have none of the symptoms only the annoyance of having it keep saying EMISSIONS WORKSHOP every time i start up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

17664/P1256 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit (G62): Open / Short to B+

Possible Symptoms

* Difficulties with starting a cold engine.

o Diesel: an indication is extreme long time burning time of the glow indication light.

* Starting the engine when engine is warmish or warm, idle rpm immediately is 1200 - 3000 rpm.

* RPM at idle is irregular.

* With all engine temperatures seldom idle rpm will vary between 900 - 1000 rpm.

* With engine warm (90 °C) the engine temperature suddenly drops (70 °C) and slowly comes back to 90 °C.

* Bad acceleration during warming up.

Possible Causes

* Wiring and/or connections faulty

* Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62) faulty

Possible Solutions

* Check wiring and connections

* Check / Replace Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62)

The connections are probably ok as this is a common fault with the AWX engine. The sensor is approx £15 and is a pull out and push in, secured with a clip.

Its situated on the back of the engine on the left hand side.

1) Make sure engine is cold.

2) take off air intake box

3) lean right over drivers side wing and look at the back of the engine block. Mine was black but some can be orange I believe with wires coming out.

4) pull the clip down and remove old sensor (may need effort) Antifreeze will be escaping but this will stop afer 20 seconds.

5) check old seal is out or still connected to old sensor.

6) Put new seal on new sensor applying a small amount of lubiricant on seal, push new sensor into engine and push new clip into postion to secure.

7) Run engine and when hot refill antifreeze.

Job done. Newbie time 15-20 mins. Normal mechanic 5 mins.

Nice one cheers.

Make sure you get a new o-ring seal along with the new sensor. Make sure too the old seal comes out, mine didn't and had to stick finger in and have a fish around for it. Think the seals are about 97p from memory, so hardly breaks the bank. My original sensor was green and the replacement was purple ..... or that could in fact be the other way around, sorry, it's been a long day. In short, don't panic if it's a different colour.

Actually buddy I have my original sensor which it turns out there was nothing wrong with it .... care for a freebee? PM me if so.

No harm in buying a new plastic clip either - might save searching around for the original one from the depths!

Sent him my original clip along with the sensor and o-ring. I must have been in good mood that day. ;)

Are you sure its was just the temp sensor? The other sensor that sets emmission workshop is the fuel temp sensor. Have you cleared all previous fault codes?

cleared all previous faults the other week hen i first came on. Fault code it threw up was for temp sensor.

Not had chance to get round to my mates and clear the fault log but after replacing temp sensor.
