Air Conditioning Annoying Me Now

Featured Replies

Evening people.

For the last few weeks I've noticed that everytime I get into the car, it feels somewhat muggy or humid- not very pleasant. Also the smell of rotting apples (which only I can smell??) seems to come from the vents even when set to ECON. Ive done various searches which suggest cleaning aircon and elimintaing bacteria with sprays but im not sure if thats my problem, what with the condtions in the car without any aircon running.

If anybody has any suggestions on what it could be or how to solve it, I'd be grateful.

Cheers

I've recently fixed Mrs Phosphoric's car with an Ozone bomb from Halfords. Cost about £9. You turn the air con on and let the thing off and it distributes Ozone gas through the system which kills any bacteria which are making the smells. Worked a treat. It's not called an Ozone bomb of course but has some generic term like air con cleaner.

Check for dampness in the pollen filter - this is accessed from the passenger footwell. It's about the only place damp collects easily and would explain the mugginess in the car anyway. That or damp carpets from water collecting in the doors...

Agreed, the cause for me was a stinking pollen filter...wasnt damp but did stink.

Replaced and all has been well since! It was less than a tenner.

thanks for the advice guys. I bought a Comma Air Con cleaner from halfrauds today and it seems to have worked for now. only time will tell whether it works properly.

Again, thanks for the advice :)

If you used the Bomb, then go and get a new pollen filter in quickly.

Bacteria can live in the filter and survive the bomb. They get reduced, but quickly come back in numbers.

Take the old one out, wipe the housing as best you can with something like dettol spray on a cloth and then when it has dried off put your new filter in there.

Yeah, but what's the point in having a car smelling like roses? B) I would very much prefer the "ozone-bomb"-way....

That's interesting - so presumably you could have your car smelling of whatever you choose maybe.

How about Castrol R, .........or saltbeef sandwiches.......................chicken madras?

No, maybe not.
