Wiper Weirdness

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I guess this is "normal" behaviour, but I've only just noticed it.

Put your wiper stalk up 2 clicks to the permanent on position (between intermittent and fast), and the wipers are on. Then, when you come to a stop at a junction, they go to intermittent wipe whilst you are stationary, and then start wiping again when you move off.

I only have a base SE facelift (2009) model, so no rain sensors or smart auto-wipers to my knowledge. Can anyone explain the purpose of this "feature" to me?

Thanks

No need for constant wiping while stationary.

What if it's bucketing it down and I can't see out the junction?

I do take your point though :)

Read your manual, and you'll find the explanation!

I first thought I was already having electronic problems with my brandnew car: wipers on permanent went to intermittent standing still, so I put them a click higher. When I drove away, my wipers went on fast. Only, your car has been programmed that way: standing still means your wipers go a click down. It's as simple as that.

Ah, thanks for the explanation

I actually did read the manual - all 300 pages of it - whilst waiting 15 weeks for delivery, but I don't recall seeing it mentioned (although I'm sure it is).

If you are already on intermittent, the rate of wiping halves when you are stationary.

The rear wiper also wipes if you put it in reverse, but only if the front wipers are selected on before you select reverse.

Yes I was surprised when I first noticed this feature, but I think it's brilliant.

Yes, I'd read about that one in the manual and think that's a great feature, especially as I reverse into my driveway

Sometimes mine wipes automatically in reverse and sometimes it doesn't. I'm probably switching things on and off in the wrong sequence but no hardship to switch wpers on manually.

Only problem with the reverse wipe is there's no way to totally disable it unless you disconnect the wiper altogether - anyone who's used a rear mounted bike rack will know of the dangers of this one... Since they also ruin your car's paint, I've got a towball rack for the rare occasions when the bikes don't end up in the car...

Have you noticed the wipers parking in a slightly different position every time you pull the key out - trick taken from the VW Phaeton to reduce wear...

Wouldn't it be nice if the rear wiper wiped on intermittent automatically when you were stationary and the front wipers were switched on. If you are reading Mr. Skoda, and you like this idea, I'd like my royalties in GOLD please :D

Just joined the ranks of Skoda owners with a 2000 Octavia. Love the car but for one minor but annoying - really annoying - quirk in that the rear wiper will just start intermittently wiping completely at random when driving. Any thoughts please?
