Mysterious Fog Lamp Bulbs

Featured Replies

Hi All,

When I look at the front fog lights on my 2010 FL Octavia Elegance, they actually have two bulbs in each of them. The bulbs closest to the centre of the car are the normal front fog lamps. There's another bulb on each side closer to the outside edge. I cannot figure out what they're for or how to make them come on. My best guess is that they are some kind of daytime rnning light, but I cannot find any setting for turning them on in the Menu or anywhere on the dash. Any suggestions?

They are the daylight running lights, and should be set up to come on, when ignition is turned on, and your light switch setting is in the "auto" position. If they are not set up, there is a section in the handbook, telling you how to turn on / off these lights.

Or could they be for the "cornering fog lights" feature?

They are for the daylight running lights, but unless they have been activated by the dealer or with VCDS, they wont come on. Even if you follow the instructions in the manual. Once activated, either by dealer or VCDS, then you can follow those intructions to activate or deactivate.

In 2011, EU law will require all new vehicles, to have DRLs as standard, however Skoda UK, is not supplying the cars with them already activated as yet, even though they can if they wanted to. I asked my dealer to activate them on my Elegance, but was told no can do.......................However, within a few minutes use of VCDS, they are now active. You have the option of having either your main dipped beam, or the bulbs in the fog light unit to act as your DRLs.

Again, cornering front fogs can be activated via VCDS, and they illuminate the main fog light bulb, when turning.

They are DRL's and the activation procedure is a bit of an old chestnut. When I received my Elegance, they could not turned off or on via the indicator stalk (instructions in the owner's manual) plus they did not appear within the Maxidot menus. The dealer, at my request, activated them (no charge) and they now appear in the Maxidot menu and can be turned off or on via that or even with the aforementioned indicator stalk procedure. Hope this helps you.

As the OP's location is Dublin, his car should have come with daylight running lights already activated, as any dealers that I am aware of, are telling potential customers of the fact that their car, comes with dlr's as standard.

If you don't have Maxidot they cannot be switched on.

Skoda will be switching them on for owners prior to 2011 when these lights become a lawful requirement.

Fed up with waiting got hold of my local dealer today. They set up lights running in minutes. So if you have them and they are not activated contact your dealer. No cost involved
