Replacing front discs and pads on Fabia Vrs

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Can anyone offer a guide (or point me in the right direction) on how to change my front discs and pads on my Fabia Vrs?

I am replacing them with OEM original parts.

Any help would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance,

Phil

No need to repeat yourself in other forums too. ;) Never done it on mine myself but watched it a couple of times and it went something like this

1) remove wheel

2) undo 2 bolts at the back holding caliper to the hub (1 above the other about 4" apart)

3) slide caliper off disc and remove old pads

4) undo screw retaining disc - careful not to round it off as usually stiff

5) Remove disc, replace with new, retighten up retaining screw

6) fit new pads in caliper, copper grease the backs to avoid squealing

7) refit caliper over new disc and redo up the 2 bolts mentioned in point 2)

8) check brake pedal has same travel, etc before going out for a drive.

To remove front brake pads.

Jack up place on wheel stands and remove road wheel.

Undo and remove the lower small calliper bolt. (Guide pin bolt)

Lift the calliper up pivoting on the upper bolt, and Remove Pads.

Remove the top of the brake fluid reservoir.

Push the piston back. either by using a G-clamp or leaver back using old pads as packing. Keep an eye on the fluid level, you can alternatively clamp the brake line and undo the bleed nipple.

To remove disc (I've not done it myself) Remove 2 larger Calliper bolts, then using string tie calliper up so you don't put strain on the brake pipe.

Remove screw retaining disc.

Replace disc, remembering to clean off any anti-rust coating on disc.

Refit calliper and new pads, putting copper slip on the back of the pads. The pads should come with a new guide pin bolt, if not wire brush the old one and put Loctiite thread lock on it. Torque up bolts.

Calliper mounting bolts: 92 lb ft (125 NM)

Lower guide pin bolt :22 lb ft (30 NM)

Wheel Nuts: 89 lb ft (120 NM)

Obviously repeat the whole procedure for the other side.

Remember to pump the brake peddle so when you first use it it doesn't go to the floor! ;)

bump plus one other question - How would I change brake fluid in this process?, do I un-clamp the hose and keep pumping the brakes and let the fluid run into a container.. then pour new brake fluid from the reservoir end when it is empty?

put a pipe over the bleed nipples and open nipple half a turn.....easier to use an easibleed pipe...pump the brake pedal slowly...keep the master cylinder topped up as u go...

Gents,

Need to replace my front discs and pads tomorrow.

Do I need a tool of any kind to push the piston out? Or can it be done by hand / g-clamp?

Thanks.

I changed standard to 312's, I'm a complete nob at this kind of stuff but it went a dream. Remember to remove the fluid resivor lid if you are to push the pistons back. No need to bleed, but if you are changing the fluid do 1 side at a time, open nipple, Press pedal, close nipple, release pedal, repeat till clean fluid flows out. Then repeat the other side. Also use some Copper Grease on the Pistons, and I think a smear on the tin plates to stop squeal. Someone to clarify this, Please.

As mentioned in my and Devonutopia's post above, you don't need special tools to change discs and pads. It is only the rear pads that incorporate the hand brake that requires a special rewind tool.

Push the piston back. either by using a G-clamp or leaver back using old pads as packing. Keep an eye on the fluid level, you can alternatively clamp the brake line and undo the bleed nipple. The last time I did it I used a crow/pry bar through the centre of the caliper to lever them back.

I don't know if you have to, but I normally smear copperslip both on the back of the pads and on the tin shims where the pad slides. I also smear it onto the hub where the disc sits.

Gents, sorry for the thread bump - but I notice Euro Car Parts list multiple sets of pads (same manufacturer) for a 2004 Fabia VRS - any reason for this?

I use a lever of some sort on the old pads. But one thing to be carefull of is alignment of the retaining bolts for the caliper. get it wrong, and you need to have the holes retapped and heli coils fittyed. MI had this problem ( suspect previous attempt had damaged one thread).
