Project Fast Taxi - Gearbox in and running

Featured Replies

Well heres my build thread starting as promised. Picked the car up tonight on a flatbed trailer. My mums touran was having a bit of a mission in 1st gear pulling away but got us home. :giggle: Heres some of the spec that i know of...

-287BHP, 283lbf-ft torque (dyno plot from Dastek before the miltek. )

-ATP GT2X Turbo.

-ATP Injectors

-ATP high flow exhaust manifold

-Apexi AVCR boost controller

-Milltek "Turbo Back" 2.75 inch stainless steel exhaust & 3 inch downpipe

-Front mount intercooler

-Induction Kit, will look for make tomorow.

-KW v1 coilovers.

-Front Upper & lower strut braces.

-Nuespeed adjustable rear anti rollbar.

-Helix clutch and Flywheel

-Original Factory 16 inch wheels + steel spare.

-Set of 5 18" Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's in black, unmarked

-Tarox disks, ferrodo pads

-Tinted rear windows

-Colour coded front grille.

-Pioneer P75-BT head unit with iPod adapter, works as bluetooth hands free kit. 30gb iPod included

Bought it with the knowledge that the diff had gone in the gearbox. Ive got a gearbox on its way but after getting a look when i got it home it might be the driveshafts, not sure but theres definately oil coming from the box. Will strip it and find out, if it doesnt need the box al sell it on, no big deal. Will need to strip it to know.

Heres a few quick pics, was getting dark though, will wait until tomorow and try and get some better ones.

Heres a wee update

Had a play about with rims the other day just quickly....would need slammed to pull off the porsche wheels!

DSC01567.jpg

DSC01569.jpg

DSC01570.jpg

Then i decided while i waited on the gearbox coming i wasnt going to bother with the outside till after the box, but thought i could give the inside a wee clean. What started as a wee clean anyway.........anyone that knows me or my cars will understand the next pic....... It ended up looking like this.....

DSC01587.jpg

The interior was pretty dirty, seats, carpets, mats etc were pretty grubby. The seats got stripped out, cleaned, leather conditioned and are now on there way back in. All the plastics round the seats, centre colsole, bits where the seatsbelts return into all ended up in the shower being cleaned with megs APC. The carpet was scrubbed to try and bring it back to cream to match the seats which were also bogging. It was all attacked with megs APC diluted down to about 1:5 on the worst its and 1:10 on the better bits. Heres a few befores of the centre console and carpet etc....

DSC01584.jpg

DSC01579.jpg

So after a much needed clean, it got the works.......its pretty pinging. Heres a few afters.....

DSC01590.jpg

So front seats are back in, backs are still in my room waiting to go back in when the rains off. Its looking good though. The CD player is awesome, the ipods been updated with all my kinda music now and works from the head unit, loving it.

Box should be here tomorow so more updates to come soon.

very nice mate deffo a bargain and now in good hands

p.s what with the front lower grills?? look strange lol

p.s.s the porsche rims would look ace drop it on its arse you got coilovers on so nice and easy.

is it just me, or does that Porsche wheel look like it's on backwards?

  • Author

Not sure whats with the grills mate? Need to have a look and see what standard should look like. Its just black mesh in the front lower grills either side. Middle one is standard i think?........just looked at pics of my brothers old standard one, so looks like its mesh thats been bodged in. Imagine its to do with the intercooler being on.

Porsche wheels might look good if it was slammed yea. 18's might be better though, will wait and see when the box is in it and have a play about with wheels again.

Yea its just the style of wheel that on that side it does look like its going in the wrong direction. :giggle:

does look good with the porsche rims on

i have some standard bumper grilles in black £20 posted if you require pm me

  • Author

Pretty sure where the mount to fit the grills to would be cut away to fit the mesh. Not fussed really, the mesh looks alrite for just now. May change it at some point or get a different grill with mesh in it or something.

Heres a big update, progress with getting the car back on the road. Gave the car a good wash during the week and took a quick photo just.

DSC01618.jpg

Yesterday afternoon me and my mate attacked the job of getting the gubbed gearbox swapped over with the one i got off a guy on the net. Wasnt to bad actually, think we had the boxes in and out in about 4 hours, but we had a few challenges along the way.

DSC01619.jpg

Stripped all the bits to let us get in at the box, lower strut brace bolts were never coming out the subframe, the signs of it having done 100k miles were showing :giggle: . Had to force the bolts out so it wont be going back on, will be getting rid of it shortly if anyone fancies it. Snapped the bolt in the uprated dogbone mount to but managed to get the rest of it out and find a new bolt to fit it back on. So anyway managed to get the gearbox out, and it was pretty obvious what the problem was. Big hole in the diff, not sure whats caused it, skipped it today so wont be finding out either. :p

DSC01625.jpg

DSC01627.jpg

First difference we noticed was the fact that a few of the bits like gear linkages had snapped in transit with the new box so they were swapped over, and the where the driveshafts bolt to were bigger on the old box than on the new one. Started to worry a bit at this, checked both boxes and both are 02J with the same code after that. Anyone got any ideas why they would be different? Maybe coming from a car like an ibiza etc which would run shorter shafts? :wonder: Anyway swapped them over from the old box and that was that.

DSC01631.jpg

Managed to burst one of the PAS pipes getting the old box out, it was obviously on its way out, tried to bodge it back together by cutting the other one and using rubber hose with jubilee clips but the pressure was just bursting the hose where the jubilee clip was biting into it so either need to get the pipes or do a better bodge :giggle: Stronger pipe maybe.

DSC01628.jpg

Also noticed that the oil return pipe from the turbo is looking a bit leaky, as if its went porous? With it being a bigger turbo are these different pipes to standard? This is one problem with buying a car youv not built! :wonder: At least when i had the fabia i had done everything to it, so I knew the car.

DSC01629.jpg

Also found that one of the vacum pipes at the back of the turbo was off, which im thinking could be the cause of it having a bit of smoke at idle, will have to strip the induction kit etc back off to get it on but thats a job for another day. Was also a vacum hose which was split and wasnt holding very well, so i just taped it up and put a hose clip on it just now to get the car on the road. Theres just daft bits which need sorted but it will take a bit of time and souring bits, hope im not giving off the impression im a bodger :giggle: Can see the pipes in question here -

DSC01633.jpg

One last thing, noticed a black fan / pump looking think at the front infront of the sump was hanging off, only 1 bolt out of 3 wasnt snapped so ive cable tied it on just now but im either going to get a new bracket or fix the old one. Just wasnt sure what it was for. Heres the part in question -

DSC01632.jpg

So as it sits the car cant run because the PAS pipe keeps leaking and spraying fluid all over the bay  So need to sort that and a few other wee pipes to at least see how the car runs with the box.

Well thats all the updates for now, more to come shortly and any help is always appreciated. Cheers, Bennett

Good progress so far!

good progress buddy

lets hope the turbo aint fecked when you run it !!!!!!!!!!!

cheap for a reason but in you hands should come good soon

good luck buddy

Cheers guys. Yea im hoping the turbo will be ok. To be honest it runs pretty clear evn from cold, its not smoky, only thing was colin saying there was a bit of smoke and the mot, will need to wait until i run it to find out. I think it might have something to do with the vacuum pipe not connected at the back of the turbo though, might cause it to overboost. Any ideas on the black plastic pump thing or the difference in the driveshafts?

Sent you a pm last night westall. Cheers, Bennett

so you did lol no i havent got them

pm andyrew he prob has them and can bring to coombe if your coming ???

black plastic pump is the secondary air system just rip it out and blank it off at the other end see robs post in the mk1 section shows you how its really not needed.

drive shafts are strange i thought they was all the same :S

p.s the oil pick up is the same as standard buddy

Cheers mate thats alot of help. will get that ripped out then, thought i remembered seing a thread on that but wasnt sure. Forge sell a blanking cover is that right? Might need to invest in one of them then.

Will try and source the pick-up pipe aswell then. Hopefully get the leaking pipe bodged on just now with some samco hose or something similar and see how it goes. Insurance has turned out to be more of a problem than i thought though with needing to insure both the fabia and the octavia so need to overcome that problem to :dull:

HI buddy if it helps I posted this How to guide in the tech section, includes the Forge blanking plate fitment .

Cheers thats a cracking right up, but removing the SAI brings up a fault code and an EML? Excuse my ignorance but what are the n249 and n112 that you removed and whats the advantage of doing that? Cheers

superb progress mate..bargain too! put the prorace's on it and bring it down..go stealth!

Looking good mate , hope its on the road soon

Now dont drive it through your living room....

  • Author

Getting some part worns for 2 of the pro races off my mate on thursday night then might fit them on. Plenty of threads left on the coilovers aswell  Yea mate its only the hot birds up your way that drive into their living rooms :giggle:

Looking good

Insurance wise if it was me I'd just get day insurance for any points in the re-build where you need to drive it to garages, rolling roads etc.

Then I guess it depends what you want to do with it, track it or use it as a road car.

First off just a thanks to westallc for putting me in the direction of PAS pipes for sale and again to Andyrew for the pipes.

Well monday night saw me putting the power steering pipes on after they arrived while i was at work. New PAS fluid, new gear oil, started the old girl up and off she went. Wasnt taxed or insured though so could only take it down a bit of private road.... :wonder: Just round the corner and back so was never out of 2nd but first impressions are good. Turbo doesnt seem at all smokey, not blue oily turbo smoke anyway. Seems to pull pretty well but again i couldnt open it right up, didnt have the space and wanted to go easy on it at first. The gears seem quite tight to get, think its to do with the gear linkage looking like its moved slightly with a bracket to accomodate the bigger turbo, whether its in the way with bigger pipes etc im not sure, might see what i can do with that though. Thats the only thing i can think of.

Managed to temporary insure it on the fabia policy, £65 for a month so was pretty happy with that. Just waiting for the cover note to come through and al be down to the tax office so i can get it on the road.

Wee update on other things while i was waiting on the pipes coming. Someones done the usual sill abuse, seems to be a VW thing and its one of my pet hates after my golf rotted because of crushed sills!

DSC01671.jpg

All the underseals coming away so will need to get it re-done soon. Anyway after a bit of bashing and prising they look like this.....

DSC01680.jpg

Got the exhaust cleaned up aswell, done think it had ever seen metal polish so heres a half and half, one pipe done, the other looking the way they both used to.

DSC01691.jpg

After the exhaust i moved onto the wheel arches, im still not finished but there better than they were. Heres a before and after of the back arch.....

DSC01654.jpg

from that to this -

DSC01655.jpg

Also polished up the pipes back to the box and the full backbox. Shiny shiny!

Cleaned all the front arches aswell, painted the rusty driveshafts, droplinks and steering arms. Also painted up the rusty hubs, well 3 out of 4, still got the other back arch to finish off but al get it done soon enough. Just looking forward to getting it on the road now

nice job on the arches, what did you use?

  • Author

Used a mixture of Megs APC diluted down to 1:4 and a scrubbing brush then onto an old wash mitt and megs apc again.

Great work mate

Love seeing these rags to riches style progress threads.

I've always been one for finer details to tidy up a car rather than spending money on them unnecessarily.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread
