4 x 4 remap

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've trawled through lots of threads concerning remaps, but not seen any reference to anyone having a 4 x 4 remapped.

So, has anyone had one done? I've got a 1.9 TDI 105 bhp estate, and absolutely love it. The only thing I'd change is that I'd like to give it a bit more overtaking oomph, without sacrificing economy. I'm thinking that there may be an issue with a rooling road - it would have to be a four wheel set up presumably?

Finally, I've seen really good stuff about P-Torque and Shark performance for remaps, but I'm in the north east of Scotland. I do travel down to England occasionally and could wait and visit either of these companies, but can anyone recommend an option up here?

Thanks

Ian

Shark Performance offer there STS unit so you wouldnt have to travel. They send you a unit with the map on the loads it onto your car.

With most haldex cars they can be put on just a single set of rollers and the rear drive disabled by pulling the fuse for the haldex out. Any rolling road with experience of VAG cars should be able to help you. Is there any particular reason you want to put it on the rollers?

Hi Ian

Have you seen our STS unit? It'll save you the drive down! See http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/sts.asp for details - i can even arrange one at the bank holiday discount price of you'd like one :)

Cheers

Guys,

Thanks for the quick replies

Dan, no particular reason (I'm certainly not hung up on absolute bhp) - I just thought this was part of the process when remapping, but perhaps not?

Shark - the offer is really appreciated. Unfortunately I'm a mechanical/electronic pygmy. I have the "reverse midas touch" with stuff like this - if I touch it, it'll go to ****! I'd much rather get the professionals (you guys) to do it, even if I have to wait a while.

Would a stage 1 remap give me what I'm looking for - a bit more overtaking grunt but with no penalty (or even a slight increase) in mpg?

cheers

Ian

Shark, I'd like the easter discount for the STS for my upcoming 1.8TSi :)

I would suggest that a stage 1 will be just what you're looking for. It doesn't make the car OTT, but a nice smooth progressive increase in power that makes it more useable, and it also makes it rev a lot better past 3krpm as well as better pull lower down thanks to the increased torque.

As for the STS - don't let your reverse midas touch put you off! The STS is really simple to use and safe too, just follow the on-screen prompts. And we're on the end of the phone if you require any support. Of course I'd be happy to see you in the workshop too, so it's entirely up to you.

The STS user manual is available at http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/_common/download.asp?item_id=69 if you'd like a read of it. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

That's no problem at all.. I've just updated the easter discount thread to include STS units - get on board! emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Ben,

I've dropped you a PM

Does anyone know what the limits are for the amount of torque you can put through the haldex unit for the Octavia 4x4? I think the DSG gearboxes are rated up to ~350nm for the 6 speeder and ~250nm for the 7 speeder (sourced from wikipedia) but those ratings are for the input to the gearbox.

Whereas the haldex is going to have to deal with up to that figure multiplied by whatever the ratio for 1st gear and the final drive is.

Wikipedia can't make up it's mind what the torque limit is for the haldex in the octavia :-/ ~1500nm ? I don't know the ratios in the DSG or the final drive either

I can only speak for the Mk 1 octy but Im guessing its similar, I ended up with just over 350 bhp & drove the car very hard, destroyed the std Gearbox but apart from regular oil changes on the Haldex did nothing else. I sold the car with just over 80K on it, numerous trackdays & 3 Cannonballs & the haldex was still working fine. I think you will find its other parts of the transmission you need to worry about as you are doing.

Its Good to see someone doing proper research & realising its torque that matters not bhp. I cant remember the exact torque for the 4x4, I think it was something like 475 Nm, re the oil changes to the Haldex, many dealers overlook this at services so worth a reminder when it goes in, its not every service.

So, took the plunge and bought an STS stage 1 remap. The STS arrived yesterday, original map loaded and sent back to Ben at Shark performance.

Looking forward to the remap, but slightly nervous about doing it.....

I'll post with the results!

Ian

you have done the hardest bit already then mate.

All you do now is copy the file to the STS once ben sends it to you, then pkug it into yoyur car and pretty much press enter.

Waiting for my car and STS too, so tell us how it goes for you ;)

While we are on the subject is it possible to re-map a 2.0 TDi PD Scout with the 8 valve engine and DPF? I've been reading through these re-mapping threads and I am thinking that the extra torque/better fuel economy would be useful when towing my caravan about (not that it seemed to struggle on my maiden voyage with the caravan last week - although a breeze down the A1 is hardly taxing). I looked at that dieselpowertuning thingummy as well but wasn't wholly convinced so if anyone has had one of those done on a Scout or 4x4 I'd be interested in hearing their experiences

There is a guy on here that has a 2.0 tdi 4x4 with dpf that is running a superchip map, might be worth having a search.

Yes that's something we could do for you :)

When remapping cars with DPF's be very cautious. The manufacturers with vast amounts of experience struggle to make cars totally reliable with them & clogging issues cause failures. To achieve more power at certain points you will be putting in more fuel which equates to more soot. The achiles heel for manufacturers is they have to make a map which works in many conditions & will spend months testing all over the world but this gives a car reliable in most conditions. A remap done in the Uk is specific to the tuners location, maps done in the UK are generally at low altitude so cars may perform badly at altitude or in conditions the tuner may not have tested for, Ive heard of major problems on a car that was remapped with a DPF, the owner went to the Alps & the car was constantly regenerating & finally failed completely descending a mountain. Its a bit like the TVR's, all mapped in Blackpool, if youve ever followed a popping banging fire spitting TVR through the mountains you will know what I mean but with a TVR it just adds to the fun. My 350 zed was mapped in the UK, always starts first time but on top of Stelvio one morning it plain refused, insufficent Oxygen, eventually with booster packs & ages cranking it coughed into life

You may find the map perfect for the usual UK altitudes & driving but problems may occur when you push the car elsewhere. If you really want to unleash more of the cars potential you may need to consider removing the DPF.

Whatever you decide do as much research as you can, talk to people who have had cars mapped, find out how they drive etc.

I believe as of January this year Revo are no longer offering tuning for the PD170 DPF cars due to DPF issues. They are one of the major mappers in the UK & have taken this decision so tread carefully. Best assign the eurocrats filter to the scrap bin

Given that there is altitude compensation in turbocharged VAG ECUs for as long as I remember (my 1993 Audi S2 has it) which would actually increase boost to counteract the change in air density (and therefore ensure that the mixture isn't any richers than it should be - i.e. With no more soot), then I cannot see a problem when the car is tuned properly.

Im not technically qualified to disagree, Im just going on Personal experience & that of others. DPF's are a minefield & not just on VAG cars. The fact that some tuners are now stepping back from offering remaps on them means research before parting with money is even more important. Like anything it can be done if done properly. I just feel for the few hundred it costs ditching the DPF will give peace of mind but thats just my personal view

Having driven Petrol VAG cars & being with friends whon have turboed Petrol Audis despite the compensator you talk about they certainly loose a bit of puff over 2000 Metres. (agreed not a problem in the UK)

OK, back to the original thread!

The map arrived from Ben at Shark on Monday afternoon, and was loaded to the STS ready to go. Due to the fact it was pretty horrible weather here in NE Scotland and starting to get dark, I reluctantly waited until the morning to install the map to the car. However, Ben was still answering my numpty questions late in the evening - thanks Ben and sorry about that...

Tuesday dawned, and, er, it's snowing! Quite a lot.

In between the showers I took the car for a run to make sure the battery was in good shape, had a sharp intake of breath and connected up the STS. Selected the "Performance Map" and sat nervously watching. I was expecting lots of alarm lights, but in fact the only one which came up was the ESP warning. The process took about 15 minutes, during which I quietly bricked it each time the unit reported that it was "Erasing the Flash", then completed. Removed the STS and went for a quick drive...

Straight away I could feel the engine pulling more smoothly, but in slushy snow, this wasn't a good test. A quick drive later in the afternoon wasn't much better from a weather point of view.

In the evening the weather cleared, the roads dried and we went for a more, ahem, "spirited" drive on the empty rural roads.

Bloody Hell, what a difference.

The car is just so much more driveable. It’s revving more freely, is pulling strongly and smoothly and has much more to give around the 3000rpm mark for overtaking. An already torquey engine also seems to have a “fatter†pull down at the low end. Around the 1700-2200 rpm mark where I do most of my driving, it's got bags more flex and pull. It’s quite remarkable that it’s the same engine really.

One thing I was concerned about was whether a remap would make the engine smoke. So far, I've sen no evidence of this.

Obviously the gearing on the 4 x 4 is a bit different to the 2wd car as the 105 engine is normally mated to a 5 speed box, whereas in the 4 x 4 it’s 6 speed, though 1st and 2nd are really for very low speeds to utilise the 4wd. So the main benefit I’m seeing is in 4th and 5th where the map seems to really come into it’s own.

I need to relearn the best revs for overtaking and cornering now….

I'm going to post again in a week or so once I've done a good bit of motoring, including some with a sea kayak on the roof and a load in, but right now I'm very impressed. I was really uncertain about the STS - my record with electronic and mechanical stuff is less than illustrious! I have to say that the process was really simple; the instuctions very comprehensive and Ben's support fantastic.

So there you go - anyone had a 4x4 Octavia mapped? Yes, Me!

cheers

Ian

And after me testing all the plug in and plays :(

Even sadder now I am looking at selling the girl on so I can buy a Yeti  but :):):)
