stripped out Mk1 vRS questions

Featured Replies

Ive been looking into getting an older car to turn into a road legal stripped out track tool.

had a look at loads of cars but for some reason never thought of looking at the vRS mk1.

How many uys on here have done this to their cars, or has no one done it.

Im interested to see what i available for them, such as roll cages, poly windows, carbon bonnets etc.

lastly hwat is an achievable weight for a stripped out mk1 vRS

Cheers guys

There are a couple of fully stripped out ones on here, the one that springs to my mind is Des's Red Devil

This has had everything stripped out apart from the front door cars and dash, seats replaced with bucket seats and battery relocated to the boot. It has a strut brace between the rear suspension turrets but not a proper rollcage, IIRC no-one does these you would have to have one custom made.

Carbon bonnets are a possibility I think TrevorB33 on here had one fitted to the car he bought off Gerry?

Some mates of mine from SCN bought a VRS last Autumn as a track car project but decided to sell it and buy an Audi A4 instead  TBH the Octy isn't very popular as a track toy because even with everything stripped out it's still heavier and more unwieldy than the other A4 platform cars (Seat Leon, Audi A3, TT and VW Golf). That's part of the reason why it had such a short rallying career.

The above link for rollcages and there was a link for a company on SCN that does polycarbonate windows that will make a big difference.

Weight wise once you have stripped things from under the bonnet and interior you should save 100kgs.

Des is probably the man to speak as he has his stripped out.

yeah ive been in des's car, that was ridiculous lol

I'd say do it! Go for the mk1 vRS and gut the hell out of it!

You could get the Golf, but why bother. The Octavia is going to turn more heads and be just as fast for what you're using it for.

Also depends what engine you want really. If you want a 1.8T I'd definately go for the vRS, as there are probably more vRS's about than 180bhp GTi's (and you don't want to bother with the 150bhp GTi).

But if you want a VR6 then go for the Golf.

If you haven't bought the car yet then see if you can get a 4x4 turbo instead of the VRS.

As standard the 4x4 is a hell of a lot quicker out of corners than a VRS even with 30bhp less. Then again it is a bit heavier because of the 4x4 and if you're using it as a road car it's a little bit thirstier on the fuel.

If you do go down the 4x4 route, Stuart J is you man to talk to.

Bah! Don't bother with the 4x4 for a track car, it's not even real 4x4 anyway! :D First Gen Haldex AWD is mainly FWD and attempts to engage the rear wheels when the fronts slip. It's gonna take more work to get as quick as a vRS anyway, as it's 100kg heavier, has 30bhp less and more transmission losses. Not to mention that the vRS has a stiffened/reinforced body. I was thinking you could get away with just completely gutting a vRS, and fitting some coilovers and ARB's, then that would be enough for a cheap track slag.

The vRS will stop quicker (lighter and bigger brakes), be quicker down the straights (more power and less weight) and turn in faster (less weight and more stiffness). You won't be able to get as near as much power down in the corners as a 4x4, but with some well setup coilovers and ARB's you might not need too, as you'll be able to carry more speed through the corners.

Then again, if you spin off and get stuck in the gravel, the 4x4 will be superb! :p
