Fabia vRS (05) VAG-COM cable and OBD

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have recently bought an 05 Skoda Fabia vRS and I would like to purchase a VAG-COM cable to interface with my laptop. Can somebody recommend a place to buy a cable because I've got a bit confused exactly what I need to buy for this car!

Also, is the vRS OBD-II compliant?

Cheers

Well I think that you should find that any (new model of) car sold since 1992 and a lot even before that, would be OBD2 compliant - or EOBD as we are in Europe. This does not help too much though as those regs only relate to engine emission controls - but they generally do extend to covering more aspects of the engine controls side - although outside of the required coding features, each manufacturer has been able to go there own way and assign their meaning to certain code numbers. So, I'd think that you should buy yourself VCDS from somewhere like Ilexa or Gendan as they are both lisenced suppliers for this kit - but it costs quite a bit. If you are not serious about scanning the rest of the car then maybe just buy a Gendan VAG scan tool for £40 delivered.

By the way, VAG products tend to have quite a lot of smart controllers - so you can usually scan quite a few other functions, the Gendan tool will scan ENGINE + AUTO TRANS + SRS + ABS - VCDS will scan all possible controllers in all VAG cars and gets free updates.
