Has my turbo blown? 1.9tdi

Featured Replies

Hi lads i have a pd105 just come up to 101,000 miles now. Always run sound never let me down once. I was driving about an hour go pulling out of a junction not particulary high revs. All of a sudden a hissing kind of screaming noise was coming from the turbo area. Theres no noise at tick over, just when i rev theres no turbo at all and when the turbo usually kicks in it just whisltes screams. There is no sngine lights on at all no smoke coming from the back whatsover. Have i blown turbo or could it be a pipe i have blown off? :'(:doh:

If the inlet pipe has come off you will usually hear the pop and lose performance from the engine, I'm afraid from what you say, it sounds like the turbo has thrown a blade or something similar, the screaming noise you say you hear could well be the now well out of balance rotor in the turbo spinning around. first port of call is to get the undertray off the car and have a good look at the plumbing to and from turbo and engine, if no joy then it is have a look at turbo time, not sure about access but pipes which run straight out, parallel to turbo axis, need taking off then have a carefull feel in side to check the fan blades, a broken/missing one will soon become obvious.

Ian.

The noises don't sound good! :( Not like how it goes when a boost hose pops usually.

Hope it turns out ok.

These turbos have a pressurised oil bearing. A common failure is a blockage in the oil feed pipe causing the bearing to fail.

i hope it does. im a 19 year old lad who doesnt have funds for 1500 pound turbo. Is there usually engine lights on when the turbo has blown though?

There won't be any lights or indicatons of failure it is only audible at the moment., I would get it checked out ASAP, because if it does BLOW it can serious damage to the engine.

£1500 is a bit much for a turbo! You should be able to get a decent low mileage one from a breakers for around £300 and then a day's labour.

For £1500 I would want a posh hybrid turbo, not a stock one!

Dont get stiffed by the garage. I got mine for £365 (1 year warranty) and fitting was about 4 hours labour. This was for 2.0tdi. Speaking to the mechanic it wasnt a difficult job, just access was awkward. IMHO I wouldnt risk getting one from a breakers yard

this is the pd105 engine, Is there a variety of turbos which can be fitted to this car? I have full use of mothers credit card and pay her back weekly so i dont know what to do. :dull:

Big stinking hybrid time :D and tell/dont tell her you need a remap to "update" the software to help the car adapt to the new turbo easier lol :D :p................you never know, it might work lol

As the car is more or less undriveable now, the first thing I would do is take out the turbo, then you should be able to get the make and model from there. Go onto the internet and there should be quite a few turbo specialists on there who can give you a service exchange unit which will be as good as new, if you know the engine code, which you can find out from the stickers in your service book or next to the spare wheel, or from your registration document, then you can go to one of these specialists and they will give you the cost to exchange.

I have the bjb engine code. Heres the symtons. I started the car this morning all whining has gone but there is defanitley no turbo. I had it up on some ramps at my mates work just down the road, he didnt take all the pipes off but he said the turbos ****ed. Bearings or something? What damage could i have done to thge rest of the engine? It still starts up fine ticks over fine and no smoke at all. Whats the best option? Im not off to the breakers, Recon turbo? Brand new unit or hybrid turbo? What will i get for around £1200.

When you get the turbo replaced, make sure the oil feed pipe is replaced. You don't want to put a new turbo in and have it die the same way!!!!

Go for a recon turbo and keep the car standard. As a 19-year old the insurance would kill you for a modified car. Big hybrid turbo=massive insurance increase for a 19-year old.

Given you have a mate in the motor trade, I suggest you pay him in beer tokens/bacon butties to put in the new turbo. It's not a difficult job but it is time consuming.

At an indie garage, you should be paying £200 or less in labour. The recon turbo, the oil feed pipe and other sundry parts will come to about £400.

What will i get for around £1200.

Atleast two recon units with fitting. :giggle:

Seriously, if you give a dealer a call and give then the vin number of the car, they will give you the part number for the turbo. Just tell them you have spoken to skoda who gave you their number. Tell them you cannot afford to buy the turbo from them, (which you probably cannot as they are about £1000). Once you get the part number you can get some quoted from recon turbo suppliers. Once you have the turbo price, get some quotes from garages to fitting it (or get your mate to do it). That way, you are always in control of your costs.

The pd105 turbo is a vnt16 - In an ideal world, you'll want to replace with a garrett (assuming blown one wasn't a garrett too?)

The model number to look out for is GT1646V. I recently sold one for about £100 which had come off an Ausi A3 with the same engine in.....
