Correct Boost Pressure

Featured Replies

I have a standard Mk1 Octy Vrs. Fitted boost gauge and is showing pressure of about -0.6 bar on idle.

I'm sure this isn't correct. Any ideas?

On a warm idle (taken when engine is up to temperature so none of the cold start systems are running) I see 25 inches of Hg. At peak boost I see 11psi. That's all on a standard engine.

So in metric thats -0.85 Bar on idle, and 0.76 Bar maximum boost.

When I first start the car, and it's stone cold, I normally see about 18 to 20 inches of Hg for a couple of minutes while the SAI pump and VVT are running. So that's -0.61 to -0.68 Bar, which looks like what you have. Was your engine up to temp when you took this reading?

If it was up to temperature then you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere.

It was cold at the time I took the reading. Will take it out later. Just wanted to check before I did the final fit into the pillar pod.

Cheers for this. All in and fitted.

If you check with VAG com or a liquid gauge you will prob see a vacuum reading of approx 0 to - 0.1psi @ idle.

Thats because the MAP sensor that the ECU reads is fitted into the intercooler and upstream of the throttle body and is only recording the restriction through the intercooler core, pipework, turbo and air filter.

PS. a good vacuum reading is what you want......it proves your engine and vac hoses are in good order

It shows about 0.6bar at full throttle at 2600rpm. When I take my foot off the throttle completely it then reverts back to about -0.8bar.

It shows about 0.6bar at full throttle at 2600rpm.

Should be a little bit more than that, that is about 8.4 psi, it should be around 10 psi (0.73 bar)

22psi boost here FTW

The correct peak boost test is done in 3rd gear on a flat road. Hold the revs at 2000rpm for a bit, then go WOT until 3000rpm, you should see your peak figure within that range. That's the procedure stated in the Skoda workshop manual for a standard car.

If it's still under spec, then you've got a leak somewhere. Like Chicken said, the peak figure should be around 10psi.
