Door and Ignition keys are different

Featured Replies

Hi,

As the topic summarises, my girlfriend just bought a fabia and the door and ignition keys are different. She therefore has to use two different keys whenever she uses the car. My only guess is that at some stage someone broke the key off in the ignition and they had to replace the barrol.

Is the only way around this, apart from buying three new barrols and keys? Thanks.

im sure if you took the ignition key to a dealer, they could order you new door locks to suit..... or visa-versa...

.... if ignition key was broken off in the ignition and new key and barrol was fitted.. surely this would have had to be done by the dealer as the imobilizer would need to be programmed to the key..... does the passenger door have a lock too?, if its just the drivers door then maybe the door was damaged and one was picked up from a scrapper,

get the car checked if you havent already done so... ie use one of thoses online vechile history checker type thingys

Thanks for the reply.

Both front doors have locks and both open with a single key, which is why I assumed that it was the ignition lock that was changed. We've done a HPI check with the RAC and it all seems fine. The only strange thing is that the logbook says that it's an elegance but there are comfort badges on the wings and I don't think the car has the elegance's features, so I'm guessing it's a comfort?

I had a look on parkers and it says for example, that the elegance came with a CD player standard and this one has a cassette player. I wonder if the DVLA ever get these type of things wrong? I'm going to call Skoda a think and get them to say what the car is on their records.

There's lots of people who can code keys to immobilisers, us included, and we do a lot for local traders too who are replacing lock sets etc. Unfortunately it could have been done anywhere.

check the chassis and engine number with the ones on the V5 too...

...... on my V5 it says my fabia is a 12v and I bought it as a 12v but i have since learned that its only a 6v..... bummer :(

so I suppose the do get it wrong...

does your fuel cap have a lock on it ? if so what key opens it?...

Doesnt it say on the engine cover if its a 12V or not?

mine only says 1.2, but i think you are right about the 12v one thou...... i found out that mine was a 6v by checking the engine code...... was not happy when i found out lol

Huh, learn summat everyday.. I thought they were all 12V.

They do.

My Fabia was a manual Comfort, but DVLA think it's an auto Classic. My previous FIAT had number plate issues cos it was an NI import. At the end of the day, they're only humans entering the data.

Back on topic though, maybe try and get an aftermarket remote locking kit for it? Only about £30 and negates the need for getting the other keys cut/ barrel changed so may work out cheaper, and add a nice new feature. You'll still they keys too if it all goes wrong.

The manufacturer can also get the car spec wrong. For instance, the option codes (PR numbers) for my car record that it is fitted with a multi-function steering wheel - which it isn't!
