Yeti Suspension - Beefy?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Can anyone help me out with a few details?

Is the suspension set up on the Yeti actually more beefy / stonger than a normal car set up?

Does it have bigger / stronger springs and dampers for example?

many thanks,

Mike

Mike,

it is designed to be an off-road vehicle, so I would expect it to be. Certainly the photos agree with that.

Hi,

took some photo's of the suspension when I changed from winter to summer tyres My link

Those were the photos I was thinking of.

I am not sure whether they are any stronger, definitely longer travel and the shock absorber in the back is yellow and this makes me happy - they created a happy driver by fitting yellow shock absorbers.

Back to the question, the front spring doesn't look especially think, my old Audi's springs are much much much thicker and larger - but then it was a 90's A6.

The thickness of the spring does not indicate strength. Have a look at the coils on a Land Rover, they aren't that thick and the competition springs are actually thinner. A lot depends on the make-up of the metal and they way it has been tempered.

I am no expert in this area, but the Range Rover we had uses air suspension - and definitely do not want to repeat that again. I know the RR, RR Sport and Disco uses air suspension, do Freelanders?

I don't actually know how thick Defender's springs are - or are the rear still on leaf springs? Anyway, if it is as good as the Defender I am very happy.

Only the later RR and Disco's are air sprung, the others use the same coil springs as the 90/110 Defender.

The Freelander uses coil rear, Macpherson strut front.

Defenders are coil all round.

Anorak now taken off!!
