Clutch Slipping

Featured Replies

Have you considered moving to a single mass flywheel?

The G60 flywheel and VR6 clutch is a popular conversion for the 1.8T. I wrote a couple of long threads covering all the part numbers and prices if your interested.

I'm loving the conversion personally!

I would be interested in the part numbers and prices as im thinking of changing soon, cheers mate

Here you are:

1st thread with part numbers at the end: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/147124-new-clutch-options/page__p__1838424__fromsearch__1entry1838424

2nd thread after it was all fitted: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/150787-clutchflywheel-review/

OE parts cost me a total of £178 in the end. That includes an LUK VR6 clutch kit, VW G60 flywheel, flywheel bolts and coverplate bolts.

Hope that helps

I didn't do it myself, as I'm not a mechanic. But I can totally recommend this! Lovely upgrade.

Hey guys. Sorry for the slow response! My broadband died last week - pain in the @ss! Thanks for the advice. Still not quite sure which way to go. Part of me thinks that if the flywheel isn't knackered (no reason to think it is) then it's a bit silly replacing it. However I do get the SMF advantage ... seems like it'll be cost effective in the long run. The Valeo clutch kit on Euro car parts looks a fairly good bet, but would be great if someone had tried it before me!!! Must be someone out there .... Blurb from the site:

Solid Flywheel Conversion Kit

The Solid Flywheel Conversion Kit has been developed to replace the Dual Mass Flywheel which suffers from such high failure rates. Because the Dual Mass is being replaced by a single Mass Flywheel you can expect greater durability and when the clutch is due for replacement there is no need to change the Flywheel so savings in the long term can be vast. Each kit will come with solid Flywheel, Clutch kit, bolts & fork where needed. Some vehicles that Conversion kits are fitted to also require a concentric slave cylinder which needs to be purchased separately.

How do you know if you need a concentric slave cylinder!?

I'll borrow this topic...

I sensing some clutch slipping @ 1st and 2nd gear ~>1900rpm, when engine is cold.. just for a half mile or something. After that it feels normal and no slipping at all(what i could notice)...

Should I start saving? :dull:

It's a -03 Vrs with 79k miles

Usual sign of clutch slip is in the higher gears when revs are right at the peak of the torque curve and you ask the engine for extra effort, e.g. accelerate up hill on a motorway or the like, check it out next time your going up such an incline.

Agreed. That's exactly how mine started to go. 5th gear at 70ish mph, then booting it to pass a car or something up a hill or with the car loaded up.

Might be contamination on the friction plate?

sorry to highjack, need to ask:

How much torque can the OEM gearbox and clutch take on a 1U vrs? (thinking 'box code is 02J ???

Seems the OP mentioned the car was jabba'd
