I’m looking to buy a mk 1 Octavia estate. I was originally looking for the 130PD engine but I understand the only Octavia estate with this engine also has the 6 speed gearbox. I had also been looking at Passat estates and have heard bad things about the 6 speed box. I am aware that the Octavia has the transversally mounted engine so am not sure whether the gearbox is the same as the problematic one in the Passats? The other option I have been considering is to get a 110 and get it remapped. From what I've heard this would take it to about 140bhp. Any comments or info would be greatly appreciated.

You're correct that the PD130 was only offered with the 6-speed. I've never driven it myself, but one of my mates has a Golf 4 with this engine and trans and has had no issues so far.

You're also correct about the likely output of a remapped 110 (also easier to find an Elegance or an L&K110 than an L&K130, and maybe even than a very late Ambiante130 [most Ambiantes have the 90bhp version of the engine, which needs more than just mapping to get more than about 120bhp])
