Virgin speed upgrade but see no difference

Featured Replies

I have been with virgin for years and have had the mega 1MB speed package from them, well they have now scrapped that package and moved me onto the £18 a month one but with a speed of 8Mb I was a bit fed up with them not informing me until i realised that they took £20.23 from my account (this was how I found out they had changed the package)

I got on the phone and went mad so they apologised and said that although the package i have been moved to is £17.99 per month but because of when they changed it there was pro-rata charges left from the old package, I told them that i wasnt happy.

Anyway they have said they will let me have their 8Mb service for £12.49 for the next 6 months then it will be the usual £17.99. But i havent noticed any difference from the 1Mb service I was getting, I have done the speedtest.net test and it says that i have speeds of 7.2Mb.

Hasnt really impressed me as i will be paying £8 more in 6 months as i was getting their 1Mb package for £10 but it doesnt seem any faster to me. My line is near the exchange and can take upto 7.5Mb.

Forgot to mention they put me on a 12 month min term when they changed me over without telling me, anyway they have scrapped that and i am not tied into any contract, I would rather just get an o2 dongle and pay as i go for what i use the net for, if they start swapping stuff around again.

have you been to www.speedtest.net to see what speed you are actually running? When mine went from 2mb to 10 mb the difference was immense!

Yeah done that it comes back at 7.8MB upload speed is 0.35Mb

not too bad to be honest. I am running 9.88 at the moment. Try dowloading some mp3/4 files and that should show you the difference. Also try streaming some HD videos from you tube, that might show off a better connection speed too! HTH

You won't see that muchdiffernce on a web page loading too be honest,

I love waving my E-peen around lol

There no difference between the above and my work pc which is on 8 meg.

Its the blink of an eye job if there is !!

cheers for the help guys, the download of an mp3 was quicker but spotify streaming still drops out now and again. I have calmed down a bit now lol

We have been with Virgin since december now when we moved into the new house.

We just have phone and broadband at £15 a month. It's 10mb btw.

Through the day we get the full 10mb (comes up at around 9.8 to 10.2mb on speedtest.net) and then drops to around 5mb in the eve when it's busier etc. MP3's are blisteringly fats and usually only take a few of seconds each!

luckily for me, my new address has virgin media :D 50mb here i come!!

Hehe. Good lad!

TBH it isn't just the sheer speed I have noticed a differnce but the ping has also decreased and the reliability of the conection. I have always found with ADSL that a router restart has been necesarry at least once a week and yet the cable connection seems rock solid with no restarts required.

k and yet the cable connection seems rock solid with no restarts required.

I switch mine off when I'm away other than that it stays on for months at a time with no problems

Get on the net - virginmedia.com -find complaints site - NO-don't complain to India .com - they'll just fob you off - and keep on complaining /threaten to move ,because they've not lived up to promises

UPDATE - had problems yesterday - speedtest down to 3 mb ,on Virgin 10 m connection . Email to Virgin brought phone call and tech out -turned out line had degraded and needed attention -now up to speed - brilliant tech - said by an old electronics/comms /computer geek .
