MTM

Featured Replies

MTM have quite a reputation in the German tuning world. I have recently read up on German sites interesting comparisons and customers experiences of running forced induction VAG cars on MTM and ABT chips. Both are good, but people say that MTM has the edge. Cheaper too. For my car, 2.5 Superb, I'd be looking at £700. So not cheap. But ABT are £1500, and currently have an offer of 30% off. So this one is completely out of question for me.

What they do, is remove the chip (EPROM) from the ECU, read the hexadecimal info from it, then zap it across to MTM in Germany by email, who then apply the fuelling and timing and EGR parameters specific to my car, then send the modified code back, it gets burned into a new EPROM, then soldered in. I think they shut off the EGR, up the fuel pressures, tweak the timing and increase the boost thresholds. They do all this to minimise smoke at the exhaust. In fact, many owners report exhaust smoke REDUCED after tuning (I guess this must be because EGR is switched off).

So, MTM, trustworthy chip, takes my car from 155 to 180 bhp. Is it worth bothering, not sure really. But interesting as a brain for thought. Plus the thought of de-badging the car and putting that lovely MTM badge on the back. On the autobahn it would immediately be recognised by all in the know what is in front of them, and it would be a rare sight indeed.

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone wants to add some thoughts.

BTW, I visit the autobahn regularly! B)

I doubt they change the chip, there is absolutely no need to even remove the ECU from the car, let alone the chip from the board.

For £700 I would have a solid gold Shark Performance badge made up for you if you wanted it!

Not that ive had this done, but ive seen 2.5tdi re-maps for £300 with similair BHP increase claims. Dont know if there is any difference?

My concern is that most of them will just "up the boost and fuel", so you get loads of smoke at tip-in-tip-out, and what not.

A proper chip will get rid of EGR, permanently off, up the boost, up the fuel pressure a bit, up the max fuel and advance the timing a bit to give the extra fuel extra time to burn.

I am a bit nervous about a dodgy chip runing the engine to be honest.

You can get the same from Denmark - Landberg.dk for just £590. My car and several others that i know have an almost smoke free PD chipped engines with higher power and better torque. If you call him i'm very sure you can make a deal with him easily for a lot less money. Anyways i do think the prices you enlist here are very steep and i am certain that other tuners can do a similar quality chipping of your car. But hey, it's your decission of course.
