Anyone like to suggest how much labour involved for a garage mechanic to fit new water pump to petrol 1.4 16i Fabia engine?

It is driven by the timing belt, so probably wise to have the belt (actually two belts) changed at the same time (unless they've been done very recently).

A ContiTech full belt kit is about £100. Pump is about £30-40 depending on supplier. You are looking at around 2 hours labour. You will also need antifreeze.

Is this a Fabia I or II ?

A Fabia II

Eddiebaby...what Hauptmann said! I would also say renew the cambelt tension too everytime the belt comes off unless again, it has be done just recently. I personnally never refitted a cambelt even if it had only done a few thousand miles. Most manufacturers recommended a new one anytime the old one came off regardless of age or mileage. I'm assuming nothing has changed on that score. Although it's just a water pump you want, there is quite a bit of work involved. I don't know what the Skoda scheduled workshop time is but I would expect Skoda to allow up to 2hours. I would expect the tech to complete in slightly less than that. Good luck.

The tensioner comes as part of the kit. Along with a idler wheel or two... Worth slipping a new alternator drive belt on too, if its done any significant mileage.

Thanks guys - the garage has estimated 2.5 hours labour.

If it is a new Fabia, is that not a warranty issue? I would expect a well serviced car's pump to last quite a few years. Ask a consumer's rights service as the pump should be fit for purpose and last a reasonable time, even if the manufacturers warranty has run out. I would certainly find out before stumping up the money as it may be your legal right!
