Alloy Wheel Refurb

Featured Replies

Confession time... I can't park for 5h1t.

Having picked up my 56 Plate L&K about a month ago 69K miles, it has now done 71K and already there are a couple of little nicks and scrapes on the alloys. Partly because we have ridiculously high kerbs and hill-like camber, and partly because I can't park to save my life.

I will make-do for the time being, but when I come to stick a set of tyres on the wheels, I'd like to have something done to try and get them sorted as I'm going to be moving to somewhere without kerbs that look like the white cliffs of dover.

Can anyone recommend someone that refurbs alloys and how to do it yourself. Is it the sort of thing to jump on as soon as you scrape them, or will they wait until a few scratches have accrued?

What is involved and what are the costs?

Thanks

depends where you live - i done the same and bent the rim of an alloy. A lot of so called places said no it cant be done and tried to flog me a new set. went to a place in birmingham who said no problem and repaired it (recommended by quinton wilson). I've also just scuffed the front alloy on the vrs and to be honest it wont get touched untill its time to sell the car as i know i'll do it again so theres no point. should i repair it myself - not if you want it looking good or depending on the damage you caused.

mine cost i think £40ish but they recommend that you have all four done to match the paint as trying to match oem alloy finish is quite hard. Normally cost's extra as well for removing the tyre and fitting it back on.

do a search as others have asked this question before.

Stunning Ta!

As with what Earos74 said, it depends where you live, I know of a guy near me (Dover) who charges £35+vat per wheel, depending on damage, but I think that is the general cost. For that he comes to you will remove the wheel, deflate the tyre and break the bead, so no pants masking of the tyre! I've seen his work and it is like OEM, it carrying a 1 year warranty and if your not happy with the job you don't pay. I plan to have all 4 of mine done later in the summer - once I have confirmed swmbo has learned to park wearing low profiles!!

Is there a particular knack to parking with low profiles? - If so... pray tell.

I've got a pack of these in the garage but I'm not sure about fitting them..............

Not particlarly a knack (or just for low profiles) but I leave my door mirror adjuster permanently switched to operate the passenger side mirror, and lower the mirror as I'm parking - where practicable not parking too close to the kerb until I can see it in the mirror.

Not that inventive I know - purely got into the habit of doing this from using SWMBO's BMW occasionally, which has an automatic dipping nearside mirror when reverse is engaged - does help surprisingly often.

Yeah, use the dipped passenger mirror. It's a massive help. Also, if you do have to mount the kerb, make sure you do it at a fairly acute angle so you've got plenty of tyre hitting the kerb and raising the wheel rim up and onto the top of the kerb out of harms way.

Obviously, park a foot from the bloody kerb!! funny how the other cars wheels are immaculate.........(195/65 R15)..............!
