Breakdown cover

Featured Replies

Last year I changed policies to the RAC because their personal cover worked out cheaper as I was driving 3 different vehicles at the time. Now I'm down to two cars and looking for a better price to renew, also I was disappointed with the RACs response time when I had to call them out earlier in the year, pretty much 2 hours if not longer despite being on a "priority" call due to my location on a larger roundabout. I was on Tesco for years and was always happy with their service, I was also with Britannia rescue when I first started driving and seem to remember them being good too. Anyone got positive recommendations of other companies or are the RAC as good as any, just switch down to a 2 car policy?

The AA everytime - never had an issue, always turn up within reasonable time and have always got me on my way. Highly recommended.

Yeah the AA. Plus their patrols have always been top notch the few times i've used them.

The fun bit is to find the cheapest way to get cover for a year. I picked up the £37 / year basic package for £17 all in by purchasing some Castrol oil a couple of years ago. There was another but i never got it and it worked out at £12 for a years cover, think it was something through Morrison's supermarket IIRC. Another time i got the full bhoona package including europe cover for £65, that was by opening a bank account, the cover came free with the account but the account had charges totalling around 65 for the year.

I use GEM, very good price (especially the family cover). On the two occasions when I've called them out they have been there in under an hour. Gem website

Had the AA out twice, both times attended within 30mins and went above and beyond to help me get going!

I used to use GEM - they're a breakdown insurer rather than a breakdown service, so you contact them and they arrange for a local recovery company to attend. You then pay the local company at the time and claim the money back off GEM. Overall the premium works out quite a lot cheaper as a result of doing this, and I never had any problems claiming the money back off them.

That said, since I ditched the Skoda I've not required the services of a breakdown company...

I've also used Skoda Assist once, think it was an RAC van. They booked an appointment cause it wasn't urgent, but where there at the time allotted and dealt with this issue :)

They have different policy options, I must admit i didnt like the sound of having to claim back money so went for the all inclusive option, still loads cheaper and got Quidco money back.

It would be worth checking through Quidco whoever you decide to go with as there are normally all the big players offering cash back.

Money supermarket have a comparison section for breakdown cover i beleive so might be worth a look

the aa are far better than the RAC, i moved to the AA last renewal of mine, after being with RAC for 4 years, i've used AA twice since, (both for flat battery) and their slowest response of the 2 was 25 mins, and the engineer carried out tests on all my various electrics including the alternator, i've called the RAC 5 times over the previous 4 years, and their fastest response was 85 minutes, and upon speaking to one of their breakdown assistants, he told me he'd been sat doing nothing for over an hour approx 5 mins from where i was broken down, as i asked him if he'd had a busy evening he said no, and his response to me was less than 10 minutes from him being made aware of me needing assistance, another occasion my brake fluid light came on, and the rac bloke towed me 50 miles as they dont carry brake fluid on their vans which is silly really! a couple of litres of brake fluid vs. a 50 mile tow i know which makes more sense to me! the AAs customer service has impressed me, and they've definitely retained my custom come renewal!

Iv'e been rescued by AA 3 times and RAC once.

In these cases the AA were definitley better, however the RAC guy might juts have been a perticuarly rough one.

I signed up to icbreakdown http://breakdown.insurancechoice.co.uk/ after RAC sent a renewal with a higher price than the first year. They have good prices for the level of service, and a handful of positive reports on the net. Luckily I haven't had to use them yet so can't comment on that side of the service.

B) I have one with a company called AUTO AID its an insurance one, covers 2 cars, at home, and when I am towing the caravan with recovery, all for about £37 ! just compare all that with the big boys. cheers - Stuart.

on a lot of the insurance ones you have to pay out then claim back the costs off the insurance though, always worth reading the small print

I signed up with these last year before driving to France, and I'm stiil covered for this year's holiday to France:

At £59 for the full bells and whistles I've not seen anything cheaper. Mind you, I haven't actually had to use them yet so they could be rubbish

I've just renewed my Skoda Assist.

2yrs full (inc Europe) RAC cover for £149.

Not needed them so far, but nice to have the backup there if I need it.

I used to be with the AA - couldn't fault them, I called them out for a lost radiator cap (stupid me), blown water pump and smoking brakes.. They either repaired or replaced all issues by the side of the road,

But I switched to my insurance brokers own breakdown cover - which was provided by Mansfield Group - as they were considerably cheaper. I had to call them out due to a dead battery during winter. They turned up (eventually) and tried to jump the car.. But it turns out their own jumper cables were goosed.

Their tech had to call another vehicle (both were full transporters, not vans). Before the second van turned up (1hr 30 mins after initial call out) a mate passed by in his 4x4 and just happened to have a set of jumpers.

He got it started in less than 3 mins.

Since then - I switched back to the AA.. I learnt my lesson.. They may be a little more expensive, but when you need them, they are spot on..

I thought their "To our members, we're the 4th emergency service" was advertising crud - but as I've needed them in an emergency, they truely do save you're bacon.

Moral - If it costs a little more, it's usually worth it..

if you want good quick service its best to pay extra for one of the big names, i.e. AA, RAC, Green Flag, as they have so many patrols you receive quicker service, and there known and trusted as knowing what they're doing, i also thought i was saving money by going with an insurance one, until i had to use it, and learnt with my particular one i had to pay out of my own pocket and then claim it back, which left me over £200 out of pocket for the 6 weeks it took them to process it,

I'm with the AA now cant fault them,
