Advice on aftermarket air filter Please!

Featured Replies

Iv just fitted a cone type air filter to my 05 vRS fabia that id bought for my previous car but had never got round to fitting. I was surprised when it fitted strait onto the end of the MAF and with a few cable ties it sat neatly in the bottom housing of the air box right in front of the cold air feed holeemoticon-0144-nod.gif . The problem i have is where or what can i do about the vacume pipe and is it ok just sitting there? Also im wondering if iv done the right thing or should i just of left it standard and put a performance panel filter instead? The car is running fine with it fitted and seems to rev more freely and have less lag but this is my first turbo and diesel car and any advice would be a great help. I dont know if it makes any difference but i thought id mention that before i fitted the air filter the car had just had a new intercooler fitted and oil change. Any info or veiws on this subject would help. Thanx.

Have a look at some posts on here. theres a fair few about k&n and sports filters damaging maf`s. As i understand it, diesels get more air than they need anyway, so the only thing needed really would be a pd160 air intake if you planning on mapping it, and a OEM air filter. But as said, thats just as i read it, have a search, lots of talk about it on here!!

My views on performance air filters are fairly well documented on here recently :D

I personally would stick to a paper air filter rather than cone or panel.

could you upload a pic or two of your current setup? wouldn't mine seeing how its laid out etc.

the vacuum pipe stick a small breather filter on the end, have a look on ebay for one, a fiver or summit

Thanks for the advice that you all gave & i will try to put a few pics up of the setup thats on at the momentemoticon-0148-yes.gif

So do you think it best if i changed it back to its original setup then?

Yeah. Get a panel filter if you really want, but it's debatable if it'd make a measurable difference due to the fact (already mentioned) that diesels run on excess air, so have oversize filters anyway. I admit the induction noise might not sound as sporty, but to me, worrying about how sporty your car's engine sounds is about as logical as worrying about how comfortable your sofa tastes...

Just my 2ps...

I agree with you ap0gee regarding induction noise as iv not done it for that reason but thought it must be better for the engine to breath more freely & one thing that has changed is that it has stopped the puff of smoke when driven hard just before boost & when first started aswell as revving more freely & a lot less lag. I will put up some pics of the setup & let me know what you all think. Cheers.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

doesnt look too bad.... at least your still utilising your oem airbox cold air feed :)

 have to admit i like the fact the airbox is positioned conveniently below the cone filter

But as mentioned before your filter isn't being protected by the hot air in the engine bay, so you will likely loose power especially when the weather is warm.

I dont think cone filters are particularly good at filtering out fine and coarse dust and it is also unlikely they have ISO5011

You could mount a custom heat shield to isolate it off from the engine bay...there's an option for you.

I'd stick with the oem setup and change your air filter regularly or get one of those performance ones if you want it to breathe better (although i can't stand those things either)

sorry if im very cynical..its just my nature.

Sorry, slightly off topic and stealing thread, but just a quick question. Planning the panel filter route (pipercross), but since I put on the strut Im kind of struggling to get the box apart.... any wisdom ideas/techniques? or will I need to take the bottom airbox brackets etc etc to take it out?

Yeah, unbolt the N/S end of the brace...

(Sorry, but that's about your only option!)

25Nm to tighten the bolts, and some Threadlock isn't a bad idea. If you've not got a torque wrench, 25Nm is about as tight as you can get it with one hand using a standard-length ratchet handle...

Doh..! ok thanks.

I have accessed my air box countess times with a seat strut brace installed and haven't needed to undo it at all - I just tip the air box arrangement slightly toward me and its just enough to get the lid off.

Yeah, some seem to have more room between them and the strut brace than others. If the top of your airbox rattles against the strut brace when you're driving, you probably won't be able to get the top off the way you've just described...

Thanks. I was pleased that i managed to get it in the bottom part of the air box where the cold air feed is & that it dont look to over the top, all be it with a some minor adjustments here & there & a few scraped knuckels:swear: but after thinking about it the last few days & taking into account the advice that all of you gave i am reverting back to the original set up with a piper cross panel filter or what other make panel filter does the job best?
