Felicia 1.6 & 1.6 AEE

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what are the differences between these 2 engines? The Felicia 1.6 & the 1.6 AEE...?

I'm still having some temperature issues and I'm thinking sod it, buy the complete thermostat assembly and be done with it. The only problem I have is which one to get. My car is a 1999 1.6 SLXi Estate if that helps.

Cheers.

the felicia 1.6 will have an aee engine..

they are exactly the same as the aee engine fitted to a polo and mk3 golf except the timing belt covers and engine mounts are specific to whichever car it came from, the parts will interchange between them easily...

also if you get an engine out of a car other than a felicia you will need to swap the flywheel and fit the bellhouse adaptor plate from the felicia, plus you will need to use the little steel bracket from under the thermostat housing which holds the knock sensor and lambda probe connectors....

does yours have power steering? if you get an engine from a car which does not have power steering and your car does you will need use the alternator/steering bracket from your original car, again this is a direct swap with no hassles

Thanks for the speedy reply.

My car has power steering and AIR CON..... doesn't work though. LoL

Not looking to change the engine, just the thermostat housing.

Cheers,

Aaron.

^^ haha epic fail on my part :giggle:

i must have totally misread your post..

in regards to the thermostat housing, it makes no difference if you have aircon on pas, it will be the same housing... one thing to watch out for is that you get the thermostat housing for a car with manual gearbox.. the auto ones have an extra pair of hose unions for the auto gearbox oil cooler..

you can get the thermostat housing from german and swedish for about £35, it comes complete with thermostat and new coolant temp sensor and a few o-rings, i bought one from german and swedish about 2 months ago and thier part number for it is 176VG0280

Ha ha ha, I thought so. Engine swapped seemed pretty excessive. Ha ha ha. Would have been thorough though!!!

Cheers for the advice. Hopefully get the temp gauge back to where it should be. I changed the thermostat and sensor recently but its still bouncing around between halfway and 3/4's. I'm thinking something else is wrong inside the housing somewhere. Its done 72k and could possibly be the original housing. Can't find any receipts from previous owner.

I would say its not your thermostat that is the problem it may be your head gasket. Didnt your car overheat recently? With a head gasket failure exhaust gases displace the coolant from the radiator. As a pocket of this gas passes over the coolant temperature sensor it is not an effective coolant so the gauge will fluctuate. From my experience of thermostat failure the engine will run about 1/4 way on the gauge and only reach half with prolonged periods of idle. I suppose change the thermostat and see how it goes.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet man!!!!! Don't tell me that

I've got a new complete thermostat assembly coming so I'll see how that goes. Otherwise I may have to out the old girl :( Will be a shame though. She's been pretty maintenance free over the last couple of years, apart from general servicing.

Well try the thermostat i may be wrong ha ha. If it hasnt cost you much so far its not all bad. You could always pick another one up for the price of a gasket job if the worst comes to the worst! Im just after having the engine replaced in my fabia so im experienced in huge problems lol.

I used to do the bigger jobs but haven't got the room or the tools any more :(

Well I fitted the new complete thermostat housing today but the temperature gauge still sits at the 3/4 mark. :@

The gauge went up to nearly full but the fan never cut in. Strange!!! But if I turn the air-con on it forces the fan on which brings the temp gauge down to the normal mark??? I'm wondering whether the radiator fan switch is a bit suspect and making the gauge give a force reading. Is it part of the temp gauge circuit?

Cheers, Aaron.

the fan circuit is completely seperate from the temp guage and sender..

are you sure there's not an air lock in the system?

Well today was a surprise....

Went out for a drive and the temp gauge sat on the normal mark. It went up to nearly 3/4's in traffic and the fan did kick in, unlike last night where I had to force it on with the air-con. It then settled back down to normal once moving again.

I thought the fan switch would be separate but also thought it may possibly be connected seeing the way it behaved today after forcing the fan on last night.

I've been out again tonight and all seems good so far. It does tend to go up and down more than I remember, or maybe I'm just being paranoid and looking at it too much.

I don't think I have an airlock. All pipes are hot, heater is good and water is pumping back into the header tank while the engine is running. Is there anything else I can check? Also what's the best removal method?

Cheers.

removal?? haha you mean the engine again don't you :wonder: did i ever tell you about the time i removed an engine in a breakers yard using just a crowbar and a hacksaw??

anyway, to bleed it, run the engine up from cold with the top off the expansion tank and massage the hoses with your hands, it's also easier if you can park on a slope or a hill with the car facing uphill

Reading your previous posts on this forum, nothing surprises me with you.... LoL

I normally massage the pipes, more habit than a conscious effort to remove airlocks though. So hopefully it isn't an airlock. I'm hoping things have settled down now. Will keep an eye on it.
