Should I swap my PD 130 Bora for a Mk I vRS?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I have a PD 130 Bora that is remapped to 170bhp and to be honest its a great little car and has plenty of go. I average about 47 mpg with mixed driving , great really!

There is a nice red VRS that I have been very tempted by .Its been well maintained(FSH) and its been remapped to 220bhp apparently. 120 k miles on the clock.

Is there anything I should look out for on the car ? What sorted of MPG do you VRS owners get from your 1.8T? Will it be much quicker that the mapped pd 130? How does the VRS handle? If its been well serviced it should be affected from engine sludging right that some 1.8ts have ,right?

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Funny you say that i have been thinking about doing the opposite and changing my vrs for a bora 150pd or maybe a 130. I do alot of miles these days and need something with better mpg, though the vrs is not to bad, i average about 37mpg with mixed driving which is good really for a remapped 1.8t.

Handling wise i would say the vrs should be alot better then the bora, i used to have a mk4 golf tdi and the octy vrs is much better through the corners.

Again the vrs should be quicker when driving using the revs, low down torque is pretty good too on the vrs but this is probaly the bora's strong point.

If it's had oil change's at the correct time and been well serviced correctly no reason why it should be effected by sludging.

When was the cambelt/ water pump last changed?

What colour is your bora mate?

You won't get anything like the fuel economy you get with the Bora but for a 1.8 turbo petrol the fuel economy on the VRS is very very good. Down around 30 or below with town driving but up at 35-40 with long motorway runs.

Handling will be better than the Bora, the VRS sits on lower, stiffened supsension and is not as nose end heavy as the Bora with it's diesel engine.

Performance wise I would think the Bora has a lot more torque as standard (and even more with a remap) but the VRS retains the torque it has a lot higher up the rev range (you're not changing gear every 2 seconds!). If you were to put both standard cars side by side I reckon the Bora would be off the line first but the VRS would be past it after a few seconds

As long as the right oil has been used and oil changes have been done according to the schedule or more often, there should be no engine sludging problems. There are only a couple of members on here who have had this, as far as I can see it mostly affects the older VW models such as the 1.8T Passatt

Guys thanks for the informative replies that's great. The belt and water pump would be done upon swapping the car.

After reading the replies Im very tempted to swap for the VRS . The only thing that stops me is the thoughts of spending double the money on petrol... :dull:

if I had a car with 220 bhp I think I would be driving with a heavy foot. So lets say I drive a remapped vrs with a heavy foot 60 percent of the time on motorways... How many miles to a full 55litre tank??

Please join freedom if you wish too sell items

362 if you are averaging 30mpg

I get 360 miles to the tank with mixed driving although I don't boot it around everywhere. I think even if mine was remapped I still wouldn't hoon around.

Just went to put fuel in mine for Castle Combe tomorrow and my last tank has done me 382 miles, although that was with a couple of motorway journeys down to the coast last week that has put the average mpg up to almost 35.

If I were to drive it similarly to the Bora I bet it would be worse than the figures you mention..Even with town/ hard motorway driving I never get less that 520 miles from the Bora . Same 55l tank as the VRS.

The fuel light usually comes on at 500 miles then its about 60 miles left in reserve so.

Really love the look of the octavia vrs but 350 - 400miles per tank max and then prob 250-300 miles per tank if driven hardish... Plus petrol costs 11c a litre more over here so I would be spending over double on fuel per week!

Decisions decisions!!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I tried to put up a few pics of the Bora in my last post but it got edited as it was seen as trying to sell the car. I have to say they are a very reliable car, in the 40k miles of driving I have not had one problem. Let me know if you need any more info on the TDIs if you are thinking of trading in the VRS's, I know quite a bit about the 1.9's and 2.0 TDIs.

For me, the fact that petrol is more expensive than diesel where you live, would be a deal breaker for me. But then, I do drive a tdi... :giggle:

Simple answer "NO" keep the bora not really an argument in my mind lol and ive had both!!!!!

What are your reasons for saying that mate?

What are your reasons for saying that mate?

Quite?

It's not black and white. The vRS is a superb car. It's just more expensive to run than a TDI. Everything else about it is superior to a Bora. Aside from the performance and obvious stuff, there's a massive boot with a hatch for easier access, arguably nicer trim (unless you have a Highline Bora, in which case I'm superbly jealous of your interior) and it's a better looking standard car.

So if you can't afford the vRS, the Bora would have to do. If you can afford the vRS, it's a much better car IMO.

As someone else here said, I've been thinking about going the opposite way to you, from Octy to Bora TDi. I'm a bit worried about the diesel grunt though. I know the new CR engines are super smooth but the old PD's are a bit rattly aren't they? I suppose you get used to it though? That's one thing you'll notice, the vRS will be a lot quieter. Will the Bora be cheaper on tax/insurance as well?

So many things to think about which is why I'm thinking of going the other way :S

I do love the 1.8T engine and handling though B)

Totally a cost issue IMHO. I have the vRS and love it. However, I also love driving my mum's 130BHP golf estate.

The vRS is actually faster but the low down grunt from the golf tdi makes it 'feel' faster for every day driving. The vRS has better handling than the golf and has a nicer interior and better seats too (however, the VW is better bolted together than rattles a bit less). The Octy is also a much more practical car (boot size) than even the golf estate so will be hugely more practical than the Bora. However, fuel costs are much higher for a little bit more performance and handling (the gold ain't so bad).

So, if you want a bit more performance, a bit more practicality and you don't mind paying 1.5 times as much for fuel, go for the vRS. If nbot, keep the Bora.

TBH mate I think your 47mpg figure for a remapped (over boosted and over fuelled), Bora producing 170bhp is a bit optomistic.

If it were true it would mean the VAG group can only better that mpg figure by 2.6mpg with the latest 170bhp spec/design engine.

Cant be right  can it

Having recently sold a modded (mapped to 184bhp & 344ftlb torque) pd130 octavia I'm supprised the OP is only getting 47mpg mind you the torque rush is quite something else, over a year my octavia averaged over 50mpg  .

Having had a modded octavia vrs & octavia pd130 they are both completly different cars, yes the vrs certainly felt faster but there was nothing I could do in the vrs that I couldn't do in my pd130 on the road in normal driving conditions.

To be honest if you have the bora and you don't need the boot space I would keep it, if however you need more boot space and not concerned about rising fuel costs go for the vrs (they do sound nice with a good stainless steel exhaust fitted.
