3rd Gear : Problem or Not?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, been a happy owner of a 1.4tsi Estate for a few weeks with no major issues bar a couple of rattles.

I have noticed however that sometimes I can't shift into 3rd gear. It feels as though it's 'locked'. If I move into another gear or neutral and then re dip the clutch and try to select 3rd it's fine.

Is this a feature of the gear box to stop mad shifting or something to get checked out?

Note I'm a pretty relaxed driver and nearly always shift when the indicator instructs me to. By boy racing days are well behind me! B)

Cheers. :)

it sounds like the linkages are slightly out of adjustment, it should be smooth across all the gears.

sounds like the problem i had going first to second - dealer replaced gearbox oil and 2nd gear syncro ring and it was fine after.

Ok thanks for the replies chaps. Strangely it seems to eased off a little recently. I'll keep my eye on it over the next few days but my wife is driving it at the moment as I'm cycling to work!

I'll see if she has noticed it as well. Not mentioned it yet as she'll panic no doubt! :giggle:

If you release the gear knob slightly when you come out of 2nd then move it up into 3rd do you still get a problem? The natural neutral position is always between 3rd and 4th (5 or 6 speed box). This will help you determine if your try to force the gear stick across from 2nd to 3rd or taking it's natural path.

I'm experiencing a "graunch" as I change down from 4th to 3rd. Doesn't do it when I change up to 3rd, so I suspect s synchromesh problem. It's going into the dealers next Friday to be looked at.
