Steering Wheel Vibration

Featured Replies

I wonder if anyone can advise me on possible causes for a steering wheel vibration i have on my car.

Its a vrs and it occurs from 40 mph onwards,it doesnt get any worse but as the speed increases the vibration gets faster(resonance).

I have had the wheel balance checked on all four wheels at 3 different places and all is well, I have also rotated the wheels front to back but the vibration is still constant and has not changed.

I have had wheel vibration from an unbalanced wheel before on a few cars but this is not as severe as that, any advice would be greatly received and thank you in advance

Severe out-of tracking possible cause ???

I have also had the tracking and alignment checked, and i have very even tyre wear all round.

Thanks for the reply.

Cause of wheel vibration is usualy wheel balancing, its cheaper to have the wheels balanced to remove the old weights and put new weights on, then having them checked, the new weights will assure you the balancing is done

Brakes sticking? if there is a burning smell of the brake pads overheating

Hanbrake still on - does the car role down/up hill with the handbrake off if so the handbrake is fine, if not the rear brakes are stuck on while your trying to drive the brakes are locked causing vibration..

Get the suspension springs and shock absorbers checked, the spring could have snapped

Check tyre pressures

Tyre Condition

Engine Mounts/Gearbox mounts bushes worn/damaged - would cause vibration in the cabin making you think its the wheels

The "dog-bone" mount is worn?

Had this recently replaced on my vRS and it made a huge difference to how the care drove, you'd be amazed at the amount of engine movement without it or when badly worn.

As with a lot of things on a car, slow degredation is much less noticeable than if something "goes pop"!
