Ive just put 17s on my VRS Help...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ive just put the Octavia VRS wheels on my car - sprayed black with a green lip (looks really good) but anyway.. i have lost a hell of alot of power.. now what could this be? on my previous car i did the same but is wasnt really noticeable but now its ridiculous! I have got 205/40 R17 tyres on (gone for budgets for now) but handles like a dream.. can anyone help? or suggest anything i can do? or even had the same problem?

Thanks Guys.

The overall Tyre radius size coming from 16" wheels to 17" will not be that different

Calculator here

The 17's maybe heavier but i doubt they would cause you to notice a power loss .. Either there is another fault with the Car ... Or it is all in your head :giggle:

Is a K+N Apollo an Induction Kit ?? If so then Yes as they are not really best suited ... Could be many other things also.. You could alwys pop the standard airbox back on for a quick trial ... DOn't forget the car will need a good few miles to adjust to a new intake Etc.

Budget tyres and an Apollo filter! lol

Probably not helping! :giggle:

I thought mine was slower when I put 17's on it but I think its all in my head!

Oh and a picture of the wheels would be good :)

Been thinking of putting a green stripe on mine...

It would probably be very slightly slower due to drag, but not so you'd notice, I'd have thought.

perhaps the Ecu and MAS have had trouble adjusting?

I have 17's and an Apollo and I have seen no difference. Apollo gives it a lovely grunt though :) (for a diesel!!)

well it deffo aint the wheels causing it..

When you say you've lost a "hell of alot of power" is that in any particular rev range? is the turbo spooling up? have you checked it with VCDS

Tyres as you probably already know do take a couple of hundred miles at least to bed in, but doesnt sound like that issue could cause the big loss in power you described.

Disagree! I've recently got hold of some 17's (facelift FR wheels) and im running slower 1/4 times (14.0 dead like 8 times rather than the usual 13.7-13.8) *mostly due to tyres I reckon on the wheels as my 60ft and 330ft times where rubbish* but also my terminal speeds are atleast 1mph down on the 16's I normally use.

Needless to say, im rocking 16's again with the week.

changing from 205/45/16 to 205/40/17 gives an overall diameter increase of around 12mm which will slow acceleration times very slightly and increase terminal speeds slightly...this is shown with your 1/4mile times slowing by 0.2 of a second, im puzzled as to how your only losing 0.2 of a sec over 1320ft but your 330ft times are "rubbish"... :wonder:

danny hall stated he'd lost a "hell of a lot of power"...0.2 sec over 1/4mile can hardly be descibed as being that imo...

i cannot recall anyone stating they've suffered any excessive differences when switching to 17's

:notme:

Each to their own, but .3 seconds over a 1/4 is alot.. IMO.

I did also point out the reason for the slower 1/4 times are more due to tyres than wheel size. However no matter how you string it with quotes, 1 or 2mph lost over a 1/4 with the only change being 17's rather than 16's is due to weight, as even with a crap launch, you will hit similar terminals, due to terminal speeds being worked out against power vs weight.

They weight more, so the car is slower. I guess to the majority of users .2 seconds here, and 1mph there means nothing, but to the odd few, it all adds up.

Car looks epic with 17's on, but meh, slower so not interested.

Still waiting on some real performance tests of yours arent we, all that power to 'show off' fella ;)

P.S If you want to get all technically, Danny hasnt lost one big of power at all, nevermind a little. As you dont loose BHP by changing wheels.. but you already know this, much like I already know why my is slower with 17's on...

aye sparky i can see 0.2- 0.3 flatout ova 1/4mile seeming a lot to the 1/4mile specialists.... :'(

but cant see how danny can describe it losing lots of power...just saying imo this cannot be due to switch of wheel size B)

my car being unleashed this week ;)

No I cant either matey, doesnt make sense, and would put it down to the air filter myself being the bigger issue. On the road, I can slightly tell, but as I dont drive it everyday, that might be another reason, but it does show on the stats down the 1/4. Will be rocking some nice white multispoke 16's hopefully by end of next weekend!

When you down the 1/4 then? I want to come ;)

It be the 17" wheels slowing him down, heavier wheel and tyre, more friction and slightly larger diameter all add up. I've tried different combos on previous cars and going up in size always slows the car noticeably not to mention they noisier as well.

ok im putting 14's on mine...

ive took the front brakes off , using a flux capacitor now...

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Thought the vRS has the same brakes as the Elegance? Get some Elegance Alloys ;) They're 14"

Idd it does but the alloys on my 2.0 elegance were in fact 15inch.
