Axles for Skoda Favorit Engine transplant

Featured Replies

I'm Planning to put a Honda B16A transplant with S1 Cable transmission into my Skoda favorit.

Have been looking at prices of custom axles but it seems like they will run me US$400 the least.

i've took advice given to me to check the parts book and see whether there may be axles from other manufacturers that will suit this transplant. I've been doin that for weeks and have not found anything.

i think the skoda spline count for the inner part of the CV joint is 22. For the B16a, the S1 gearbox uses a 25mm/24 teeth axle

It would be great if someone could assist.

help anyone?

What length do they need to be? Are you sure you can't get the "right" hub inners to fit in the Skoda hub carriers (in the way felicia16v has done to get Vauxhall inners to fit into Skoda hub carriers by using a different wheel bearing)?

ok i would start with checking what wheel bearing options you have, the fav/fel front hub carriers take a 68mm dia bearing, so find out what size the honda bearing is first and see if there is a bearing available that is 68mm x whatever the honda inner size is or close (if ithere is one that is say 1mm smaller than the honda you could machine the flange to suit)

what you really need to do is get the measurements off the honda such as the distance between the outer cv joints etc and compare those with the skoda to see if the honda shafts are too long or short (or maybe lucky like i was and find that they are ok).

i would say if you cant do those bits easily then dont bother at all as it will just sit in a shed unfinished for ever..

been looking for a while, still nothing. guess i might just hav to use custom axles.. :S but i'm still keeping a look out. What i'll do is get the engine in and measure up the length is the axles neeeded and by that time, if i still cant find something that works then i guess ill just use custom axles..( Found a company that makes them at US$150 each)

$150 each? That's cheap. Are they good quality?

Sorry, i checked again and it was actually US$185 each. They say they use 4340 alloy. I did some research and found out that this alloy is good for axle fabrication. Guess thats my best bet.

I still think that's cheap for custom-made axles - check out the prices some rally boys pay for theirs, it's astronomical.

Well... i requested a quote again this week and apparently it wasnt US$185 each but $685 EACH!!!

SO i am yet again on the hunt for axles.

Well, that's more like I would expect - I know plenty of 4WD rally boys who pay £1k per shaft... but we're still waiting for actual information about them - length, splines, inner and outer CV dimensions - as Jim says you may be able to make something up out of existing parts instead of going down the expensive custom route.

Oh ok. I'm still looking for information myself. Somehow i am leaning to the weld-sleeve-weld method of joining the skoda and honda axles together. However, this will just be temporary; Just so that i can drive around after the transplant while i still search for info. This is my only car and dont want to be without a car for two long.

I see your point. If I might suggest, ask around and see if you can find someone who balances drive and propshafts before you get too committed.

Friction welding is another option - some production shafts are made that way, not sure of the costs, but it could give you a permanent solution cheaper than made up shafts.

Someone suggested friction welding to me before but there's nowhere here in Jamaica that does it. And besides, i can guess it costs alot, not to mention shipping and duty fees.

Sorry, didn't realise you were in Jamaica! I'm not sure on costs, I think if you had the prep done on the cut halves of the axles already (which isn't that complex, just the right tolerances needed) then it wouldn't be crazy money to have them done, or send them - you only need to send the shafts without the CVs attached? Would it not be possible to have them done on a temporary import licence (as they're being worked on and returned to you)?
