Next Car - Help me choose

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I could use some help and advice choosing my next car. ATM I'm looking at either a Golf Estate SE with the new 1.6TDi CR (105PS) engine or a Passat Highline Estate with the 2.0TDI CR 110PS engine.

I don't have any choice on the engines - that's what is available on the scheme. I'm quite familiar with the VAG 1.6TDi CR (105PS) in the Golf, but I'm not familiar with the 2.0TDI CR 110PS engine in the Passat.

The 1.6TDi CR returns 62.8MPG in the Golf whereas the 2.0TDI CR 110PS in the Passat only returns 50MPG (quoted combined). I'm assuming both are going to perform comparably to my current 1.9TDi (105PS) Octy Estate.

Does anyone have any experience of the 2.0TDI CR 110PS in the Passat? I can get the Passat for about £8/week more than the Golf, and quite fancy the extra spec that comes with the Highline - full leather and all the toys. That said, I would like the extra economy of the Golf too but it's not that big of a deal as I currently do low mileage. So which should I choose?

Interestingly, both work out significantly cheaper than an Octavia on the scheme I'm using otherwise I'd stick with Skoda

Any input or advice appreciated

Passat proberbly. its a much bigger and heavier car though so maybe slightly slower than your current car.

Thanks mannyo.

The Octy is 1385Kg vs the Passat at 1482Kg, so the Passat is indeed 100Kg heavier, and this is reflected in their 0-62mph times of 11.8 and 12.0 sec, respectively. Would I ever notice the difference, real world?

BTW, the Golf sits right in the middle at 1445Kg and 0-62mph time of 11.9 secs.

Also, are there any good VW forums around - not that I want to leave Briskoda (which is excellent!), but I just feel a bit awkward asking VW questions here :giggle:

I had a test drive of the Passat 2.0L Estate today. Overall it felt quite similar to my Octy - the big difference being the CR engine. It didn't have that punch in the back power delivery as the turbo kicks in, but rather a smoother power delivery. As a consequence, it "feels" slower but I'm not sure it actually is. If anything, I think I actually prefer the thrill of the PD engine.

It felt a bit heavier maybe (which it is), and the overall quality inside the cabin felt better and maybe a little more spacious. Just a shame the 110PS engine is the only one available to me, but overall a nice car. Given the increased spec of the Highline model over what we currently have I think we've made our choice

Only niggles I could see are that I'm not so keen on the keyless start system (poke the fob in the dash thingie), and although the electronic handbrake system seems to work well enough, I wonder how long before it breaks (excuse the pun), but I'm not that bothered on a lease car.

Remember that Golf = Octavia and Passat = Superb
