"Rough" engine note in first on fl vrs

Featured Replies

My petrol FL Vrs has 1500 miles on it but when pulling off in first, just for a moment before the revs rise the engine note sounds quite rough, almost like diesel clatter. This is only for a second and then everything smooths out and runs quietly. Does anybody know what I'm trying (probably unsuccessfully) to describe - I assume its normal but can anyone confirm? Thanks

If this is when you are first starting out in the morning then I would say I have noticed something similar. I havent noticed any roughness in first at any other time though. Mine is a DSG so I dont get to use first gear very much but first thing in the morning the engine/transimission does seem to labour for literally 30 metres and then goes back to normal. To be honest I was wondering whether I had a brake dragging.

Mine does the same thing (1300 miles on the clock)... If you hold it on the clutch (i.e. on a hill) it does it and also on intial startup it sounds momentarily a little like a diesel.

I think it's normal....

Yep mine is similar to, just done 2,500 miles. I've driven a few FSI engined cars from the VAG stable and seems to be a characteristic - must be something to do with the direct injection.

must be something to do with the direct injection.

Yeah that's exactly what it is. The noise sucks, even although it only occurs initially, it'd be better if it wasn't there. All the direct injection petrols suffer it, some are much worse than the VAG FSI engines.

It's the reason the fuel economy's outstanding though so i can live with it given the benefits.

yeah - same here.. it literally is only for the first one or two gear changes.. (just the oil working through?)

I don't have a VRS, but this is exactly my experience in my 1.4 TSI. It's a peach of an engine and smoother than a baby's bum, BUT, whether hot or cold, there's a slight 'diesel' roughness in 1st gear when taking off. Disappears in 1st the moment after you apply pressure to the accelerator and isn't apparent in any other gear. I'm assuming it's clever black box (ECU) gubbins.

at last the one thing on the car i do not like is now explained :wonder:
