Winter wheels (again)

Featured Replies

I want to buy spare additional alloy wheels and have them booted in winter tyres (4x4 model).

I've read various post and 'TP's technical data - many thanks. Based on this the selction seems to be between:

6J 16 ET50 – 205/55 R16 94H

7J 16 ET45 - 205/55 R16 94H

6J 17 ET45 – 205/50 R17 93H

My question is which do folks think is the best winter size wheel - I would probably have gone for a R16 so I could get a deeper tyre?

Any user data on rim selection and tyre manufacture combination - that can be bought in the UK?

I'm a Costco member so can get a good deal on any UK available Michelin tyre.

Cheers

Your selection of sizes seems to indicate that you want to use chains. Why?

It is highly unlikely that we will get a repeat of the snowy winter from 2009/2010 anytime soon. I have been very wel served with the standard 16" Yeti wheels and standard size 215/60-16" winter tyres. They did very well in the snow and other stuff and at the same time were very close to the summer tyres in handling on wet and dry roads. If yu need to be able to fit chains, you still can on the rear axle with the standard 16" set-up.

Edit: winter tyre size in signature corrected to 60 series.

Thanks for the comment.

I do not wish to use chains.

Whilst I live in Bedofrdshire I travel in and around Derbyshire all the year. The weather conditions at any time can be quite a challenge on the roads I use but more so even in a normal winter.

Any advice on just winter tyres and wheel size for this would be usefull.

I have been very pleased with the Goodyear Eagle winter tyres in the standard Yeti 16" size. I tend to favor the ADAC tests and lean most towards the highest wet weather rating. Mostly, the tests are not for the Yeti sizes, so something close is also OK.

Hi,

my choice of winter tyres and rim size was based on my experience of driving both Golf and Octavia 4x4 on standard fit 205/55 R16 tyres, Skoda's winter tyre size recommendations and cost.

The winter specific 'Flash' alloys were far to expensive so I went for the steel rim's as specified for the Yeti 'E', fitting 205/55 R16 94H tyres as per Skoda guidelines and selected Nokian WR2 on recommendation from grahamr.

(Note: at the time 4 steel rims cost just a little more than 1 Flash alloy, although the fairly pricey Skoda wheel trims bumped up the overall cost)

Found this combination for me anyway works well, albeit I have to put up with a slightly over reading speedo and mileage counter.

Regards,

TP
