mk3 golf vr6

Featured Replies

Always wanted a mk3 golf vr6...and still do! Im now in a position where i could buy 1 though the vrs will have to go :(

Ive just got a company van and the vrs will just be sat on the drive now on the week days, plus i need some extra money for a deposit for a house so it's looking like i may sell the vrs.

But i fancy a vr6 now for spinning about at the weekends :p What should i expect coming from a remapped mk1 vrs? im thinking it wont be as quick, or handle as well but the vr as a lovely soundtrack.

How much slower will it be? i dont think the vr6 is slow looking at the figures a good 0-60 time and its lighter then the octavia, im thinking it must understeer a fair bit what with the big 2.8 lump up front. Anyone had one what did you think? i know Babs as one so come on mate what are they really like?

Im looking to spend 2k and really want a mulberry highline 3door one ive seen a few on pistonheads that look good for that money.

Shame you're not a bit more up north, could have taken you out in mine :)

It'll be a little slower when going for it, but the torque comes straight away, no lag - and it builds and builds! Mine's got a panel filter and a cat-bat exhaust. And sounds like Chewbacca gargling when on full chat :giggle:

Understeer isn't a problem, really. On standard shocks mine was a bit wallowy (but they were originals anyway!) - currently have Weitec coilovers and it corners very well now!

Main problems are (and I've had most of them!):

Rust - Mk3's like to rot on the sills and floor pans, suspension turrets at the front and all four arches - My turrets are fine, rust everywhere else!

ABS - the solder joints in the ABS ECU crack and make the ABS do strange things. Reconditioned ones are expensive, but not as much as a new one! Can be DIY'd if you're handy with a soldering iron

Headlights - due to the wiring, the headlights only get something like 8-9v at them! You can relay them straight from the battery though.

Highline will have Climatronic A/C and leather. The leather is likely to be fairly knackered though!

Timing chains - if they're noisy then it's a gearbox out job to replace them, and since you're doing all that labour you might as well get a new clutch, and do other engine work at the time. Gets very expensive!

Economy - all depends how you drive - I get 35 @ 70mph, 38 @ 60mph, and anywhere from 18-25 around town :)

My Golf was £2,200 on 75k, with a full VWSH. It also had a/c which is fairly rare. With the rust sorted mine will be about £3,000-3,500 judging from other ads on Autotrader.

In all, its not a massively quick car, but it will give most modern warm/hot hatches a run for their money. And you won't be scared of rep-mobiles, either ;)

Anything else, just ask!

Cheers mate just what i was after.

If i do sell the vrs i won't be in a rush to get the first one i see so hopefully i will get a good one, like you say rust seems to be a problem.

I saw one with recent full respray going for about 2k....sold now though but they are about.

The other thing that appeals to me about the vr6 is you dont see many of them about which is a bonus in my book!

One other thing what revs are you sitting at say 80mph on the motorway? also do you know where peak bhp/torque is on the rev range?

Cheers mate. ;)

Here's my dyno graph from Awesome:

IMG_0002.jpg

Peak torque is at 4,000 rpm, but there's not much less than that available from tickover!

Peak power at 5,500 rpm, and I can feel it tailing off to be fair. But it is strong!

I wouldn't worry too much about the rust, unless it's started eating the car. Wings are bolt on, and there's plenty of Mulberry ones about so you can just bolt on new wings.

At 80... 3,000 rpm? Not much really!

I looked at VR6's a few cars back.

Quite nice to drive, nowhere near as much understeer as i expected.

I drove a few, finding a good one is difficult (although automatics are dirt cheap and in a lot better condition), lots of modified ones around.

I ended up getting a BMW. Seemed silly to have that much power, and have it going through the wrong set of wheels.

Never really had a traction issue, to be honest! The power and torque is smooth so there's nothing really to unsettle the wheels :)

Your not driving it properly then :giggle:

Thanks again Babs.

I really love my vrs and will be sad to see it go...... but the vr is sounding more and more appealing now that i dont have to worry about mpg so much.

Think i will have to find one local for sale and have a drive i hope it lives upto what im expecting.

You can sit in the passenger seat if you'd like? ;)
