Several Questions about problems about the car :P

Featured Replies

Right my wife just picked up a octavia 2 140bhp 6 speed diesel its a 54plate Elegance with 65k on the clock with full service history etc. It was bought from an independant garage (who are pretty good and neighbours :p).. Right it has a few miscreant problems but in general has just done 600 miles without missing a beat.

Right what im after is answers so i can go back and get it sorted whilst under warranty.

Firstly possibly the most annoying is the Stream Headunit (its not the Mp3 one but multi changer in the back) Why is this unit incapable of good reception. the car has a massive aerial but on the M5 reception of radio 1 is terrible. Even my brother in laws camper van with a coat hanger does better. Possibly the worst radio at being a radio ive ever had in car/ Cds are fine. What can i do (nothing mega expensive).

Secondly, Hot starting, from a cold start is fires easy no problem first turn. But if you do short journeys in town when its warm it requires quite a bit more turnover ??? (battery weak possibly??) fuel filters any ideas.

Thirdly at very low revs when trying to drive slowly in 1st it seems like it surges like power off and on if you rev a bit more it stops.? normal or throttle sensor. ??

Aircon/Climate control should it come out ice cold, seems a bit pathetic on low just powerful fans? regas?? known problems??

Finally, Bonkers reversing sensors. Sometimes they work fine other times they tell me there is something within crashing distance. Is it something simple like poor alignment or is it a bad connection somwhere. Its is annoying as you cant trust if anything is really there.

I know that sounds bad but we got it pretty good deal, the garage will be good but i want ideas to go with them they do allot of vag stuff but mostly poosats and golfs. Any ideas appreciated.

Sounds to me like it's telling you to find a decent Radio Station emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Seriously though, there's been threads on here about the Stream radio poor reception and also a known fault with the antenna unit (sorry for being vague, but I'm new to Skoda and don't have a Stream in my car so don't pay loads of attention to threads about the Stream radio...). Here's a couple to get you going though...

I think there's been the odd thread or two on hot starting problems too...

It may be that the aerial amp (located inside the base of the roof aerial) is defective. They cost about £18 from GSF and you can replace it yourself. Check the radio service menu to see if the radio thinks the amp is working. Reception should be fine.

Regards the aircon - set the control to LO and after a couple of minutes feel the outlet pipe to the condenser (and the top of the condenser). The pipe should get quite hot when cooling hard. If the pipe is not hot, or barely warm, then you have a fault (low gas, compressor fault, or control system fault). Not that the car uses a variable displacement compressor, so you'll not hear a clutch clunking in and out like on a limit-cycle controlled system.

well i did the menu trick and it says the amp = on but the actual signal is pants so i will have a look at getting a new aerial and amp for it.

thanks for the help so far the aerial looks a bit grubby so maybe that is it...

Well i seem to have cured the throttle at low speeds as well, searched through allot of threads and tried the throttle reset method seems to have done the trick so far. Car is booked in for thursday about the hot start and bonkers sensors..

Also how cold should the air come out on low? as in ice cold or slightly colder than ambient any ideaS? its got the climatronic/auto version ..

It should definitely feel a lot colder than the ambient air. I've got a broken compressor at the moment and the air coming out is about the same temperature as the outside air. Last summer I was able to get condensation forming on the outside of the windscreen if I left the aircon on LO for too long.

For the uneven engine running you could also try what's called the 'cage mod' which mostly involves unplugging the air flow sensor, filling the plug with silicone grease and reconnecting it - some of the problems with uneven running are caused by corrosion in this plug. The silicone grease seems to sort it out.

Parking sensors seem to be a very common problem on Skodas. Next time there's a fault get out of the car and listen to each sensor. The ones that work will make a clicking noise, the one that doesn't (And it's usually only one) is silent. It can also be the wiring loom as this runs under the edge of the boot rim and can get crushed. My parking sensors only work in hot sunny weather (They worked once so far this year), but I'm too lazy to pull the bumper off to replace the faulty one.

Not sure about the hot starting, but there are definitely other people who get the same thing.

The hot starting problem is fairly common, although I seem to associate it more with 1.9s (mine certainly did it). I can't remember the most common causes. You'll have to get stuck into a bit of searching on here for that. You should turn something useful up.

Thanx for the info guys. Since i reset the throttle the idle seems much improved but maybe i will do the cage mod anyway there is nothing to lose :p .

The sensors are crazy, Sometimes working perfectly and ive been using them in hot/dry and cold/wet and that dosnt seem to effect them. I will try bending down and listening to them click. Would a non active/broken sensor cause the problem or would it not do anything??? crushed cableing sounds plausible as well. causing wacko effects.

The aircon definately dosnt go as cold as my colt czt used to or the wifes fiesta.. i will get em to give it a gander, arnt the compressors expensive to replace??

Right its been in the garage, Supposedly the temp sensor on the engine was faulty and the reason for poor reception was as stated, dodgy aerial. Waiting for parts now then will see if this does it :)

sorry double post

RE the Radio recption on the Stream HU, I've recently just upgraded my old Stream with an MFD2 and reception is now crystal clear whereas previously it was dire on occasion. Is it possible the sensitivity of the unit itself could also be to blame here?

AC should be ice cold.

When I bought my VRS 18 months ago I drove home on a hot day - half way home we put the AC on to find it was not much cooler than the ambient air.

Took the car back, they tried a regass but that didn't help.

Was in the end a failed compressor.

Done under warranty, thankfully, as it's a 2 man job for about 2-3hrs and the part costs around £800.

Do some skodas come with AC (push button blows cold air) and do some come with that climate control??? if so mine is the climate control, I have all the numbers down to 16C then low.

  • Author

The system you have on yours, with the numbers down to 16 then LO, is the CLIMATRONIC climate control, fitted to the higher spec models (Elegance and L&K)

The system where you have standard heater controls, and a button marked AC which makes it blow cold air is the CLIMATIC, and fitted to the lower spec models (Ambiente downwards)

Hope this helps

Mike

The next question is does the climatronic produce as cold air as the standard AC units. You dont hear any extra engine load from it but neither did my vectra when you turned on its dual zone climate thingy.. Or do both cars have the same compressor just implemented differantly.

oh well this is mildly annoying

drove today to the dump came back sitting at the lights in heavy traffic, and the temp warning came on

had to keep going for about 500m or so till i could park on a kerb, all coolant gone : / Car smelt horrible strange it should happen the first time i drive it after the temp sensor got changed ; / feeling ****ed off, although at least i had radio signal while i waitied for a push. My luck atm sux.
