hi as i was towing caranvan approx 3 miles from home loud engine rattle octavia elegance 1.9tdi when no accelaration of pedal no rattle,when accelaration rattle returns,when parked rattle not as bad then disappears .car then taken small run 1 hour latter no problems.

I had a similar thing happen on my old Schitroen. Switching off the ignition, then re-starting the engine stopped the rattle. It only ever happened twice in 40,000 miles and I assumed it was a glitch in the ECU. HTH.

It's a diesel, or I'd suspect pinking (which is impossible on a diesel, unless you get premature fuel injection).
