Jerky over-run

Featured Replies

Having solved my sticking throttle problem with help from this forum, I seem to have created a new fault. When slowing down in first or second gear the car becomes very jerky. I guess that when the throttle was hanging up it kept some power on working against the brakes and this has been eliminated. Therefore I'm guessing that the rear engine mounting is failing and the engine is rocking back and forth with the torque.

Is this right? And if it is, do I have to get all three engine mounts changed or can I get away with one? I'm thinking this is beyond my skill or at least my equipment so it will be a garage job I guess. Has anyone had this done and got an idea how many hours I would be charged?

Thanks again

Michael L

you are quite right in saying that it is the rear engine mounting is the one that normally goes. there's no point changing the other mountings to be honest. it's a dead easy job to change the rear mount you only need a few spanners (13mm & 16mm iirc), i'd be surprised if it took you more than 5 mins to change it.

Thanks. I'm surprised to hear that the job is so easy. In the Haynes guide it gets 5 spanners and it says that you need special Skoda equipment to press the mounting rubber out (and presumably the new one in). My fear is getting stuck in the middle of the job and having to tow it to a garage. But its good to know that it won't take long if I'm not brave enought ot try it.

Tom is right, it's a piece of cake. You replace the whole thing including the metal bracket that it's part of, and as he says, you'll need only 13mm and 16mm spanners/sockets to do it.

This is the kiddie:

And as you can see from the pic, there are 4 bolts to fit it. The three on the black metal curved bit bolt to the gearbox (13mm spanner needed), and the central mounting is the 16mm spanner job for the larger bolt. Easily done, even just on axle stands. 10 minutes.

Haynes are full of crap, some of the jobs they describe as 4 or 5 spanner aren't difficult at all. And whoever the halfwit was who restructured their manuals needs a slap.

Excellent. Thanks guys. I'll order the part right away.

I'm back again! I've changed the rear engine mounting - which was completely knackered. But the jerky over run is still there. As it arrived when I changed the throttle body I'm beginning to think it is a duff unit. But before I get another one has anyone any ideas? It seems as if the throttle is shutting off too fast when I decelerate.

Thanks
