New alternator for me!

Featured Replies

Is this a common fault for those of us with 110 TDi engines? Apparently using aircon increases tension on the belt which drives the compressor, alternator, power steering etc. So the other day, I heard a loud thud and suddenly the steering went extremely stiff. Turned out the sound was the pulley on the end of alternator shearing off and being flung into the undertray emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Bad times! Expensive times too!!

I had that happen to me! I was lucky cos my alternator didnt need swapping as garage managed to get part off the alternator that was stuck on but he did say it was a miracle that i got away without replacing alternator. Think it was around £100 including the part and a new belt. Did your belt start slipping? mine did then it happened a couple of days later

hadn't noticed belt slipping. i'm going on the assumption that my climate control is always set to econ. but because recently it's been so hot I put it on A/C. Must have been over stressing for a day or so then suddenly during gentle 30mph driving it just went!

New alternator is £270 odd +vat plus a new belt. damn weather!!!!

I just had a look at my reciept and the pulley was £45 and belt £15 plus vat and fitting but I had the mot and discs and pads on the bill so don't know how many hours labour I hot charged for fitting. But would be guessing just over £100-130

New alternator for 110tdi (ASV) engine was £150 including VAT and new belt from euro car parts, or they had a recon bosch alternator for £150 + VAT + £57 surcharge.
