For those who have had clutch problems...

Featured Replies

Hey,

I've just recently noticed that If I'm doing 67-68mph doing 2k RPM on the motorway. If I boot it the revs will jump up to just under 3k then drop and then continue to pull. Engine noise is paired with this jump.

However, If I'm doing 40mph in 4th gear (Just around 1500rpm) on a slight hill and boot it, the car pulls without any jump in RPM - very very well. It only seems to jump when in a high gear and once booted. If I use half throttle at the same speed its fine. I don't get any jump in RPM in any low gear and the car pulls very well, no signs of slipping at all. It only appears to be on motorway driving.

My car has been re-mapped (Stage 1, 170bhp) with no other engine mods. It's done 57k on OEM clutch. (Re-map was at 50k)

Do you think this is the sign of the clutch on its way out?! Does anyone have any symptoms similar before they had to replace their clutch?

Mark

Yup your clutch is slipping, mine started to slip a couple of weeks back so I've had to be a bit more gentle with the throttle.

There are various clutch options available the most expensive being one that replaces the DMF with a SMF, well worth it though ;)

Thanks Richard, not what I wanted to hear!

Price wise what are we looking at? I could probably get it fitted free as I do some work for a garage. However, if the clutch is on its way out, I would uprate it.

You can get a standard clutch and DMF from vag-parts.com (I think that's what the site is called) for about £300 iirc,

A sachs organic/racing clutch that uses the standard DMF is approx £600-£700

A sachs/helix SMF clutch kit is 1k

Some people have said fitting would be about 5 hours but if your getting it fitted for free then your sorted.

I'm currently saving for a new clutch aswell as other things that the car needs, I can see my wallet running away to hide now lol

Hi mate, I think Moggytech posted a couple of months ago about oem clutch and dmf kit for much less than £300.

PM him for the link. Alternatively have a go with the search function but look up Moggys profile

and check through his posts. You're more likely to find it this way than using the standard (rubbish) search function.

Right this is what ive been told by several mechanics.

The dual mass flywheel should not be removed because modern oils do not asorb vibrations as well as the old oils. To solve this dual mass fly wheel was placed to soak up the vibrations, you take the dual mass out for a single mass, more vibration is getting into the gear box (not good). Also the idea of a lighter flywheel is to make it rev faster (slightley) a lot of stock cars have them so they car rev out eaiser this is not the idea of a diesel engine, this is only what i have been told by mechanics so dont think its just my point of view, and believe me ill take the advice from these guys as they really do know what there going on about (unlike me!)

As for me my clutch is slipping and am going to replace with sachs performance clutch (640 quid) and am doing the slave cylinder while im at it (35 quid)

Thanks mate, did you try the same in yours at all? Also, as the standard is slipping, is it worth replacing with another standard clutch?

James, Thanks for the info. Is your doing similar things to mine? High gears e.t.c.?

Yeah slips through the high gears, and jumps from the same rev range as yours as well.

If you can get to TPS (or get someone to get it from there for you), the DMF should be about £105 + VAT (well, the one for mine is), but is only available from them as a service-exchange item. The clutch is about £125 + VAT (IIRC). Retail prices would be about 30% more than that, I think.

I got a helix and smf a couple of year back for 830 parts!!

No problems with it! I now have a sachs with dmf on my new fabia the helix and smf was far superiour!!
