Tyre Pressure Problems

Featured Replies

Hello Chaps and Chapess-ess

Newbie here, i have a Yellow Mk1 Ocatvia VRS, on a 52 plate, not that that is relevent - just a point of interest - currently unmolested! B)

I have done a search and can't find any info but I have just recently changed all 4 tyres, Federals, they were on originally and I quite liked them, anyhoo - the front two were done some time ago (around 2 months) and have lost a couple of psi - I can cope with that, but the back 2 were done last friday, so far the NS has gone completely flat - twice, and the OS has lost about 10 psi. :'( The OS was losing before I had the new tyres put on, so not totally convinced this is a fitment problem - is there any history of leaking wheels I should know about or does this genuinely sound like poor fitting?

The wheels are the original/standard wheel setup. Seals and valves were replaced at the fitters.

Any feedback is welcome, cos I imagine come Tuesday morning I will be banging my head against the tyre fitters wall! :wall:

Cheers.

Jim.

never heard of this get it back to the tyre fitters sounds like either poor fitment or dodgy wheels

Could be paint peeling problem on inside of wheels, had this myself inside of wheels need sanding down or a wheel refurb should cure it.

I would take them back to the fitter and get them to put them back on, as a first port of call.

The fitters might have big bucket of water to drop the wheel and tyre into and that might give an indication as to where the leak is.

I would keep quiet about the leaking pre-tyre change as that way the tyre fitter will probably do more work as they might think they are to blame :giggle:

Seals and valves were replaced at the fitters.

What seals were replaced???? Do you just mean then painted some "goo" around the rim edge?

Will be the inside of the rims no getting a clean befor fitting and is letting air out or the valves are not done up right.

Or your the most unlucky guy in the world and have gotten 2 slow puntchers already :giggle:

My wife had a similar problem on her L&K.

One tyre had to be pumped up every week!

After many returns to the tyre fitter, and numerous replacements, they eventually found it was the wheel peeling where the tyres joined the rims.

They scrubbed the rims down and that seemed to solve it.

Cheers for the replies, I'll feedback to the tyre monkeys tomorrow!

The wheels are maybe getting a bit long in the tooth, so maybe a refurb is in order...

Cheers,

Jim.

Had a similar issue recently on my old '99 Audi and it was due to the alloy wheels starting to rust resulting in air leaking in between the seals. Not a tyre fitment issue, but they should have mentioned this to you when they inspected the wheel before fitting the new tyres. Frustrating thing is that to get the wheels refurb i then had to pay again to get the tyres refitted afterwards. Ending up costing me £300

Ok, been back to the fitters and had them refit, he also removed a load of corrossion with a wire brush while he was on, and so far so good...

Cheers,

Good news. The not so good news is that the rust will obviously return, although this may not be for some time before is causes the tyres to leak air again. Fingers crossed it will not be until you need new tyres again anyway.

When I got my vRS in October last year, the garage put 4 brand spanking new tyres onto the alloy wheels, they were budgets but new. Anyway immediately noticed 1 of the tyres was going down constantly, took it to a Kwik fit garage and they told me it was a rim seal leak and they couldn't fix it. But reccomended a guy who could. I had all 5 alloy wheels checked and was told they were all bad. Luckily for me this was about 2 weeks after I got my car and I rang the garage right away and they agreed to cover the cost of 4 of them to be repaired by a specialist. He charged £60 a wheel but did a fantastic job on them they all looked brand new no scratches etc, matched the colour as best he could (but also offered to do them any colour I wanted . They even cleared off the rust from the 5th alloy wheel for me for free which was very kind of them.

I can't remeber there name but they are based in York.

I have this issue on a couple of my wheels too. I'll lose about 4psi over the course of a month. I've had 3 different sets of tyres on the wheels, and they have always weeped a bit of pressure. The fitter commented earlier in the year that I'd need the wheels refurbing or replacing soon. Hopefully it gets to the point where I have an excuse to buy some new wheels!

I've got some 5-spoke Compomotives on my Suzuki and they are pretty badly corroded! One of the new tyres went totally flat overnight, and it took 2 further attempts to get it to seal. They definatley need a refurb!
