Three spokes or four

Featured Replies

One of the options on a Yeti SE is for a three-spoke (leather) steering wheel. Any opinions as to whether or not three spokes is better than four? Increased visibility of the dashboard instruments? Decreased even? I can't see a picture of said three-spoker in the Yeti brochure, so I don't know where the spokes sit - two o'clock, six o'clock and ten o'clock? Or 3-6-9?

Hi again,

spokes at 3-6-9, with 'thumb hooks' on the top rim. Not keen on the three spoke myself as the bottom part of the rim where the spoke connects is 'plastic'. Four spoke has a complete leather rim.

Don't believe it makes any difference in viewing the instruments.

Think on the more expensive Golfs it's chromed metal ? Could possibly retro-fit.

Personally dont see why it is an upgrade.

And an expensive one at that!

Well spotted! I found this one as well:

Seems it just has more pronounced "thumb hook" and obviously just one less spoke!

Good pic/links, thanks chaps. Now I can agonize over three spokes or four. I'm starting to come round to the old Soviet model of car ownership - one colour, one level of "trim" :) Actually, I can't even remember how many spokes my Peugeot has so maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill ...

I'm guessing that the 3- and 4-spoke wheels have the same diameter and exactly the same size and shape of upper 'opening' through which to see the speedo/rev counter, in which case there's no functional difference between the two - just down to cosmetics. But it would be useful to have confirmation of this.

But if say the 3-spoke wheel was any larger OR the upper opening was a bit larger then that would definitely be a plus. Some of us find that the view of the main instruments is a bit restricted by the 4-spoke wheel, but this obviously depends on where you have the seat and steering column set, your own size and shape etc.

From the images I've been able to find so far, the three- and four-spoke wheels seem to have pretty much the same upper opening. Looks to me like they've just replaced the bottom two spokes with a single one at six o'clock. In fact, if anything, the four-spoker has a slight advantage as the three-spoker has pronounced thumb rests.

We need somebody who has two Yetis :)

3 spoke wheel seems a total waste of money given that it does nothing differently to the 4 spoke wheel.

In my opinion the 4 spoke looks better and could possibly be worth a slight premium if 3 spokes were standard.

Maybe, but this is surely one of the big joys of ordering a brand new car. I've never done it, always bought an ex-demonstrator or off national stock so I'm envious of your patience, financial situation and the fun you'll have picking it up.

I think I have the four spoke, will look out of the window... yes and I like that because you can rest your thumbs on the lower spokes. V Handy.

If I had put my car together I'd have ordered the 'mushroom' leather interior, but as I have a 3 year old who like sticky sweets the black cloth will do until I swap this in.

By then we may have the V8 or hybrid, DVDs in the rear and a 7 seat option too.
